Then I don't see where the dilemma is. Take the other job, if you don't like it, then come back to this one. Doesn't seem like you've burned any bridges. If you tried to "let him down easy" and he just made you feel more guilty, Then why go back to help him? If worse comes to worse, then tell him that his wife is being a bitch and that he should talk to her about it. It is after all his wife, so he should do something about it.
