Ok, I could be completely wrong here...so you might want to wait for someone who is more familiar with the language.
Katakana = used for foreign words. (There's a little symbol that turns the character into something different...maybe that's how they count the extra ones? Or maybe that's just with Hiragana? I don't know ask Raze.)
Hiragana = Simple, common use characters? ka ke ki ko, ect ect.
Kanji = Based off of Chinese characters, everyone can read them, but they pronounce them differently.
