I'm guessing you've already completed 101 then right? This is only week 3 of my first term of it, we're still learning hiragana characters in lectures (although I'm ahead of the curve because I have them and katakana memorized already, and since I aced the test this tuesday with 46/46 correct (hiragana matching quiz to proper order in the character sheet), next tuesday (which is a re-take for those who passed the test but only matched the section that was required this week, 23/46) I get to enjoy a brisk walk and a trip to the vending machines around the corner.

Granted, the cafeteria is quite far don't think I have enough time to run and order food there.

My point is basically, I'm just guessing how it works based on my reading ahead in the textbook, in this case we won't learn any kanji until Japanese 102 (different textbook for each of 101, 102, and 103 at this college...) so my sentences won't be correct very often until at least i finish 103 probably, since these are all first-year Japanese classes.

I know I used incomplete sentence after taking some Japanese 101 this term, really it would be more proper to say it like this (in hiragana only, I know no kanji so forgive me):

わたし は この ため に かんしゃ して います。

wa-ta-shi ha(spoken:wa) ko-no ta-me ni ka-n-shi-ya(shi + half-height 'ya', to make 'sha') shi-te i-ma-su.

Note that spaces are not necessary or correct, I just used them to show separated words and particles in this complete sentence.

Also, I broke the words into the individual hiragana characters (read:syllables) so that everyone can understand them, and made notes so that you can sort of understand how they're constructed.

Time for more (probably useless) Japanese 101 wisdom:

Sentence structure - in the Japanese language, the sentence must contain a verb to be a complete sentence. The sentence order is as follows:

Main topic --> time-related --> sentence object --> verb

Note that 'verb' is defined differently in Japanese, and certain particles, such as 'no' can act as verbs at the end of specific kinds of sentences.

But, how do you make words that do not directly adhere to the hiragana syllables? How is that possible?

Take note that the hiragana characters 'ya', 'yu', and 'yo' can combine with any of the 'i' row of characters to form a combined (compressed) form, for example, chi-ya is spoken as 'cha' and written as ちゃ. note the half-height 'ya'. this happens to the 'y' column when you combine it with a proper preceding character.
