With a Single Glance, you can see that this one is Really DARK...I got the same impression like Saikano gloomy and dark atmosphere, except this one got awesomely high rating...but i don't know...is it good??...watchers??

Genres: drama, mystery, psychological, science fiction, supernatural
Plot Summary: Lain Iwakura appears to be an ordinary girl, with almost no experience with computers. Yet the sudden suicide of a schoolmate, and a number of strange occurrences, conspire to pull Lain into the world of the Wired, where she gradually learns that nothing is what it seems to be... not even Lain herself.

It is a really weird series. Strange stuff happens, and you end up confused most of the time, but it is a good show.

Hmmm.Too much logic. But I do love dark, gloomy themes.Also.Hmmmm the story could just be all in her head.Or is there really someone pulling the strings. It's up to you to decide.Which is which and what is what.Is it real or just an illusion or a dellussion.who knows.

Watched it in my early days, which probably helped contribute to how confusing the series was. Didn't like it too much. My friends fan wanked to it daily back in the day though.

Watched it, found it solid but I'm still far from singing praises over it. Not my cup of noodles I guess ...
Gonna give it another go when I'm 30.

the series is very good and very philosophical. A little like Neon genesis evangelion it has a story on the surface, but there is much laying under it, wich takes a little time to figure out. This is one of the best series I have seen.
Here comes something I like to point out on the ending:
Spoiler
anyways Im going to look through the series again sometime and try to figure out a little more things :)

ah mah gawd
why have you people JUST started to watch this?
this came out years ago!
ah screw least you actually started watching it
character designs by yoshitoshi ABe
who did many more werks such as texhnolyze, nieA under 7 (or NieA_7), Haibane Reimei, and the cover art for light novel of Yokoso ni NHK
the opening theme Duvet by Boa is an old fave of mine, having both a remix (CyBeria Remix) and an acoustic version
its other OST are quite good as well, such as 'cloudy, ocassionally with rain', 'iNFANiTy World', ''s'peEd', 'tooi sakebi', 'psychadelic farm', 'KiDS', and 'island in video cassette'
music ranges from great to plain outrageous
its a good anime despite being short and i luv how the dark mood is
the animation is good despite being made back in 1998

There is a thread on this, however I didn't know if it was okay to bump a year old thread or not. If it isn't okay then a new one may as well be made due to the increased number of people on Fakku since that created thread; I want to hear people's opinions on this anime.
So, Serial Experiments Lain, one of the better animes I have seen. This is an extremely underrated series; even the people that watch it say that it is "weird" or "boring" - this is because they don't understand it. Lain is a masterpiece and needs to be seen by more people. The DVD is actually being re-released next year (2011); the series was made in 1998, airing from July 6 - September 28.
I want to hear your opinions on this anime.
I have also just uploaded the anime for download in the user upload; anime section along with a few other things so do go and watch it.

Just throwing it out there that Lain is probably the best anime I've ever watched, quality wise (its not the most enjoyable series as it requires you to think sooo hard). It was an amazing story and involves so many different philosophical themes as well as strong psychological and moral aspects. I think everyone takes Lain a little differently. To me I found it was about a girl discovering her true identity in a world full of different layers of scociety. The Wired is one of the coolest themes I've ever heard of and the way they used it to tell the events was incredible. This anime can scare a lot of people away as it is so deep and very hard to watch sometimes. But if you watch it and understand it you will come away amazed.
It sucks that it did poorly, mostly do to the fact that it was completely overshadowed by Evangelion which came out around the same time. I think Lain is a lot better personally. Lain is actually showed in some Universities in Philosophy and Psychology courses.
The 13th episode beginning contains one of the most ground breaking ideas I ever seen. I constantly think about it.
The idea of existence is so complex, and the idea of identity is as well. Is the you looking at this computer and the you on websites like this essentially the same existence? Or is it a different identity. Its hard to say whether or not this is the case, and if it is, which is your true identity. What is reality? Can the internet not also be a reality? Do you necessarily exist if noone knows who you are? The questions and points that this anime raises are mind-blowing to think about.
