One Outs

PLOT
Hiromichi Kojima, the star batter of the Lycaons, heads to Okinawa to train and bring himself out of a slump. There, he meets Toua Tokuchi, a 134 km/h (83 mph) pitcher and the undisputed king of a gambling form of baseball called "One Outs". At Kojima's urging, Tokuchi signs up with the Lycaons. His contract, the 'One Outs contract', differs from the usual, though, in that he gets 5,000,000 yen for every out he pitches, but loses 50,000,000 yen for every point he gives up.

One of the five animes that MadHouse studio produced this season that I'm currently watching..and enjoying! When you associate Baseball into Gambling, it can't get any better than this!
also love its OP & ED themes:
Pay money to my pain - Bury
Tribal Chair - Moment
(haven't found either full versions yet)

I didn't like it. 3/4 through the first episode I dropped it. I thought it was a lame idea overall betting on such retarded terms.
A Huge letdown after Akagi and Kaiji. They would have been better doing the second season of Kaiji instead.

Too bad you weren't able to appreciate its plot.. I'll tell you, the REAL fun begins at episode 3, when the ONE OUTS CONTRACT has been MADE!
You can't judge a series by MERELY seeing its 1st episode! I'm in no position to force you but IMHO, I suggest that you reconsider..
No offense but to me, it felt like you insulted this series when you said "betting on such RETARDED terms" when all you've seen is just "3/4 of the 1st ep." May I ask you, what kind of GAMBLE is NOT RETARDED? If you've seen Kaiji, I suppose you'll understand what I mean.
If you don't like this series, there's nothing I can do about it and I respect that. Just be more considerate of others' thoughts & feelings in voicing out your opinion next time... 8)

What I meant by retarded terms is simply that betting that kind of money on something that has no Mathemathics implied or statistics is pretty dumb. Yes the element of luck is there but I just can't simply see it happening in the first place. I mean it couldn't actually happen in real life. That's where Kaiji and Akagi differ from this series. Even though they were betting incredible sums of money they could think of tactics, implied odds, you get my drift.
I agree that after only seeing one episode my reasoning might be shortcoming to you. However like I just stated I couldn't get into such a plot. If you find the word retarded insulting you should reconsider. I could also say it's a pathetic plot. This is by no means a way to insult you or the series. I am simply voicing my opinion on the series with words so people who read this post know what they are up to if they decide to watch the show.
Seriously betting 300 thousand us dollars on weather or not you can hit my fastball, forkball or slider...
Yeah there is the whole mind game that's alluring to it but other than that I don't see what's alluring to it. I don't see why my words were improper. Especially since I was comparing it to two other series.

I have to agree with Zellgadus. Gambling with baseball just doesn't work. Major, the anime, is what I would call the epitome of baseball, and is the best baseball anime I've ever seen... for that matter the best sports anime I've ever seen with the exception of Hajime no Ippo.

I didn't really go as far as to say that this is the best BASEBALL anime there is... I appreciate One Outs for having such a different SPICE(flavor) than the usual sports oriented anime like Major for ex, wherein the main character (GORO) is always so Desperate into WINNING at such lengths that he can barely see the bigger picture..It's not all about the pitcher nor the ace hitter, It's about the TEAM(FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD)! IMHO, I don't even believe that (variations of)FASTBALLs alone is enough to be able to strike-out someone(Pro Players for that matter) repeatedly! Ookifuri (Ookiku Furikabutte) for me is the epitome of what a baseball anime should be like.

This extends from the later half of the first season and into the fourth season, and there's no way you can be playing at the Minors level without having team spirit. I've heard of Ookiku Furikabutte, but apparently people said the anime sucked while the manga rocked.

I know, I know him too well. I've seen Major from its 1st episode up until its 4th season which I'm currently watching. I've seen an equal share of his ups and downs, I even got emotional when his father died and so many things have happened since.
I just wanted to express the difference between One Outs and the USUAL sports oriented anime and I just used Major as an example. I just wanted other people to know that they're not going to see a character like Goro in One Outs, if you know what I mean. I'm not trying to degrade Goro's character or anything...
~in addition to that, most people usually don't like watching sports anime because of characters like Goro who's always eager to give it their best to win and in the end, no matter what adversity they face, they always come out on Top..it's sort of a given don't you think...while in One Outs, winning the game is just 3rd priority!
(sports adapted anime usually have at least one major setback)
SlamDunk - lose to Kainan
Hajime no Ippo - lose to Eiji Date
Buzzer Beater - lose to whatever alien team I don't even want to remember!
Major (3rd season) - lose to Kaido
Eyeshield 21 - lose to Seibu Wild Gunmans
~last but not the least, I still believe that OokiFuri is a much decent BASEBALL anime than Major..I suggest you to see it for yourself in case you haven't.

I didn't try very hard to watch the series, but I couldn't even get past the opening. It's got to be the gayest opening I've ever seen. And I'm not using the word "gay" as a synonym for "crappy." It is, literally, the most homosexual opening I have ever seen. That's saying a lot, because I've seen the opening to Gravitation, which is probably the gayest show ever created (that wasn't rated 18+).
I'll probably try to give the show a decent shot once the season ends, but I have a lot of other series to watch, and One Outs doesn't strike me as a series I should put first. After watching Akagi and Kaiji, I thought I was a fan of gambling, but I realized that I was only a fan of extreme gambling, where lives are at stake. Baseball gambling is tame in comparison, even if a lot of money is at stake.

Gotta agree on the "gayest op sequence" ever, ... and compared to Kaiji or even Akagi(which I have yet to see) you can say that it's more "tame" since LIFE isn't at stake ... but NOT RETARDED(i hate that word)! if ever you'd put more thought into it, gambling was created as a sort of entertainment, therefore, it again comes down to each peoples' preferences.

I actually liked the first episode enough to be wanting more. At least I really wanted to see the 2nd episode...but I haven't gotten around to it. I will definitely continue watching this sometime.

As for people who don't like to watch sports anime, I don't know why myself, but I can't place a reason why people don't like them either. Then again, I've watched my fair share of them, and a lot of the earlier sports anime also heavily focused on romance, which ruined it for me, though I still enjoyed watching them. Aoki Densetsu Shoot, Hungry Heart Wild Striker, Touch, etc. were sports anime that I liked, but definitely thought the romance could have been cut out because it made the series that much more headaching. (Anything by Mitsuru Adachi is headaching... like Touch, H2, Katsu!)
I'll give OokiFuri a try, but probably won't be after quite some times because I'm trying to clear out space on my laptop to play Left 4 Dead, on top of a list of stopped torrents of other completed anime seasons from boxtorrents.

I've been watching this series and as ridiculous as the premise is and regardless of its massive inferiority to Akagi (and Kaiji to a lesser extent) it's entertaining. Tokuchi is a pretty cool character and I like sports anime.
Just wondering, why exactly is betting on baseball retarded? People gamble on sports all the time. Not only that, playing those "get three baskets and win a prize" carnival games is pretty much the same deal as One Outs. The extent to which the show takes a premise that has to strain logic slightly already is pretty absurd. But questioning the premise on its existence alone is a meaningless complaint to justify a lack of enjoyment. I severely doubt that anything remotely similar to the show could ever happen in real life but taking it apart because it's gambling without math and stats is retarded.
