Story:
Hikari Hanazono, the main character, has always been second to Kei Takishima. While Hikari considers Kei a rival and somewhat of a friend, Kei loves Hikari. Everyone knows this, but she is too dense to notice. Their wrestling loving fathers first introduced them to one another when they were 6 years old. Assuming that she was the best in wrestling, young Hikari challenged Kei to a wrestling match only to be thoroughly defeated by him. Ever since that fateful incident, Hikari swore to beat Kei in school grades, a sporting event - anything. To do this she has enrolled in the same school as Kei since elementary. Now she attends Hakusenkan, an ultra elite school, that costs her carpenter father a lot of money. Hikari and Kei are the top two students in the school, with Kei holding firmly to that number one position.

well I tend to watch anime that has romance/any kind of school atmosphere, and while I agree with others in that the manga is by far much better, I didn't like the artwork for the manga as much, but since I liked it in its anime style I was able to enjoy the series a lot more, I got some laughs and over all enjoyed the series, might make me consider going back and reading it some more.

I LOVED this series. Especially the episodes in the middle got me cracking up every couple minutes, and I was watching this while my life was going through one of its lows. It does take a while to get into, but doesn't stop it from being hilarious and cute.
Though, as is typical with Shoujo series, it does get pretty cheesy at times. But the humor way more than makes up for it. I highly recommend this series (though as has been pointed out, the manga is better, but this goes for all adaptations).
Wish my high school had a Special A class. T_T

Well when I was showing this too a friend who likes this kind of stuff as well, he had a hard time sitting threw the first half, god know i really wanted to skip a lot of certain parts, but for the sake of the anime I stomached through it and the outcome was worth it, still my fav character manga/anime was Megumi, and her particular episode just made me love her moar.

As a few others already have mentioned before me, it was indeed a very fun series to watch. I couldn't compare it to the manga though since I haven't read it yet. I did manage to see the manga's "art style" where I'd have to say that I liked the anime better in that aspect. As Raze have also mentioned, this is your typical "shoujo series" thus one should expect a lot of "cheesy" moments/scenes, but if that didn't discourage you from seeing this, you'd certainly be laughing in the next minute.
Definitely a worthwhile series to watch.
Another series that I probably would never have seen if not for:

Funny, I think I'm the only person here who didn't like this. I barely made it through the first episode. There are a dozen shoujo series with almost the same exact premise and the only realistic character in the first episode was the delinquent who complained because the student council were acting like a bunch of spoiled brats and disrupting school life for everyone else. I found the rivalry between Hikari and Kei to be tiresome and predictable, the same formula as other titles such as Kare Kano, and after a while I just wanted Hikari to shut her trap.
Granted my opinion is probably biased since I saw this first episode at a convention after they put it in instead of an anime I wanted to see. I was highly irritated so I didn't give the series much of a chance. It may very well get better after the first few episodes, but I doubt it. It's probably just not my cup of tea. After Kare Kano, Ouran High School, etc... one gets sick of the ultra-popular seitokai nonsense.

I've noticed the similarities between Kare Kano and Special A. And it didn't bother me, I guess I'm just a hopeless romantic. :D
Though I have yet to see Ouran High School.

The situation between the main characters in Ouran isn't really similar, but the whole idea of a too-pretty club of people that run the school is exactly the same. There's actually very little romance in Ouran. It's a funny story, though, so I enjoyed it.

I didn't like this one either. I started off with the manga and I liked that. I liked it for ~40 chapters.
But whoever voiced Hikari was so drat awful to my ears that I stopped. Even the manga. :l Don't get me wrong, (Yuko Goto, right? I ❤'d her Mikuru) she isn't a bad voice actor, but it just wasn't right ESPECIALLY since she sang the OP. I skipped it the couple episodes I did watch.

I've finished this, and I have to say that I've enjoyed this series. I've never expected Megumi to fall in love with Yahiro. It was a twist. I always thought Yahiro and Akira would somehow reconcile or something. Also I like how he said he'd play the villain for her.
Overall, I loved Special A. :D

I'd like to also give a shout out for Special A - great shojo series to watch with reasons that everybody else listed. (Though I've yet to watch Kare Kano.) And Fukuyama Jin's at it again! His cool playboy voice is total win.
