Summary:
In a world that looks like the 19th century with anti-gravity devices, Claus and Lavie are pilot and co-pilot of a Vanship and act as couriers. They become involved with a mysterious mission after rescuing a little girl from a strange star-shaped killing machine. Not willing to let the girl die, they complete the mission by delivering her to the legendary mercenary ship Sylvana, only to become part of the crew as fighter pilots.

All I have to say is that I'm surprised this wasn't on the list and that this is an awesome anime and you should watch it nao.

Curious and Wondering
I liked this anime as well (watched it last year), pretty decent storyline and artwork (loved the OP as well). But this is an anime I don't prefer to watch again and again, though I'd like to watch it again this year (November) or so when there's not much good anime airing for a week.

GREAT. I found some mates here. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE this animation, although the graphic is not that good. But think about it, an animation which aired in 2003 has such graphic is an amazing thing :D. Besides that, not to mention the story line is exccccceeeeeeeellllllllleeeeeeeennnnnnttttttt. Although I watched it loong loong time ago, I still remember the emotion of Alex(the captain of the Silverna) when he saw the Delphine Eraclea's ship appeared at the coronation of Sophia Forrester. DAMN GO FXXKING KILLED that BITXH, something like that, and the entire crew was shocked. That's my favorite scene :D

Well for the aerial-naval battles with the Battleships and Vanships they did use some "Early" CG work but that didn't really turn me away at all from this anime. In fact I remembered watching this on Tech TV when they did a special hour late night of "different" anime then what I was used to. It was only the first 13 episodes where it leaves off with the Disyth (Cant remember how to spell it) fleet launches off to cross the grandstream. When I finally did get the complete box set I sat and watched it in one sitting and was completely satisied with not only the story but both the Japanese AND English dubbing. The story was great and the characters were portrayed very strongly (none of those why is he doing that for crap).
Overall 9.5/10
I put this up in my top 20 series.

I've watched all the episodes about two years ago, and i've really enjoyed this anime.
Graphic design and music are simply perfect, and the steampunk setting is well-made. The only complain i have, there're too many parts of the plot that are implied in the narration, and not explicitly explained through the episodes, so maybe sometimes you can find yourself a little bit confused; but overall, this is a minor complain, and the anime is still valid for me.

The only anime to really capture steam-punk. I loved the series. Surprised as well that the topic for this anime hadn't been made.

I remember that when I was watching it, I thought it was really, really good, but now afterwards I can't remember shit of what it was about, something that I usually do. I think I was disappointed at the end.

It was a really good series in my opinion. The steam punk was just awesome, has some great animation for being as old as it is (others I've seen from ~2003 look pretty bleh). An amazing soundtack, had to buy that, and the limited edition DVD set was the best usage of $75 thus far. The story really captures the essence of friendship and doing what you want to do. I took that close to heart as my dad was a pilot and I an aspiring one. They had different perspectives and out looks on it . Also, the clash between the upper and lower class along with the guild was really well played. The ending for me was mind blowing to say the least, but should have been done in two episodes, and they could have made it two seasons, having things to expand on such as the Guild Rebellion. I think that would have been a cool snippet for a side story, among other things.
On closing, the funny thing is, I had just subscribed to Netflix and saw the anime section and remembered how stupid anime was (when I was like 10ish) and added this as a joke to really mock anime and never get through the first episode... Was I completely wrong, not only was the first episode captivating, but as my first, it was a gateway to the epic of the unbeaten path that is anime.
So, as my first ever anime show, and for just how awesome, start to finish, visual to audio, 12 out of 10. I would recommend anyone to check it out, way worth watching...again...and again... and again....

Watched the dub on Netflix streaming recently, and the English voice acting was quite good, IMO. Nice, detailed and smooth animation, and while there is a good helping of CG, Gonzo blended it nicely with the traditional animation. They didn't overdo it and try to add CG to random scenes like some other anime (Ghost in the Shell 2.0, I'm looking at you).
All the characters are nicely designed and their personalities aren't over the top and exaggerated. Even each of the vanships are highly detailed. Plus there's a nice original story.
Didn't like how the Guild ended up although I did find him kind of annoying at times...
The only thing I found a little bit annoying was that the story progressed a bit slow, and the ending was little rushed, IMO. Still a great series overall.

If I did not remember wrongly, Last Exile was a production by Gonzo, wasn't it? It was also one of the titles which left a deep impression on many viewers.
It was also thanks to Last Exile that I started to notice Range Murata's works.

I've never heard of this anime. I'll have to check it out then since it seems to have a cult following.

This series is definitely underrated. True, it could have used a few changes here and there, but overall it was a great show. I hated what they did to the character Dio, though. Just when I finally started liking his quirky ways...that...happened to him. Also, the ships were beautifully designed and very well though out. Definitely something to see if you are into the Steampunk genre.

MORE ROBOT ANTHOLOGIES.
Ahhhh. Nostalgia. I remember watching this late nights, years ago. This anime has mesmerized me from the first moment I watched it.
I, too, am surprised this was not in the master list when mentioned. @_@
The ending wasn't that all over the place.
Though you kinda got a glimpse of the ending by looking at the villages and town, and the environment if you actually paid very close attention (though hard).
What surprised me was a world shaped as a dyson's sphere.
And that it revolved around the last colony ship with coordinates to earth.
Heh go figure.

On another note;
Range Murata is an excellent artist, love the character design, ships, items, everything! Love the whole retro steam punk feel. The sound track I also thought was steller.

Bahh.

Seems like I'm turning this into more of an imageboard than a messageboard... Maybe there should be a section for discussion about specific artists?

Hm, I wouldn't use nosebleed, think thanks for ero pictures only, ask a mod or maybe we can make a topic in Anime Discussion with pic discussion. Better yet artwork.
