Alien Nine

Ok so after years of meaning to get to this short series, I finally did.
Well, I did... AND WOAH.
Wasn't able to find a thread for the anime when I searched, so I'm starting one now.

Spoilers (well, on content):
I've seen some effed up crap happening to children in anime. But this took the proverbial cake. This series utterly must be one of the most upsetting shows that isn't actually full of gore or upsetting spoken word. It just... I don't even.
I remember seeing the manga on the shelf of my local bookstore but never buying it, but something about it always piqued my interest... need to read it now, as I really would love a ton of questions answered.

Otani Yuri, much to her disgust, has been elected by her class for alien fighting duty. Together with Tonime Kasumi, who joined the alien fighter simply for the sake of doing so, and Kawamura Kumi, who became and alien fighter to avoid the responsibility of yet another year of class presidency, she must defend her school from periodic alien attacks. Introspection, fear, anxiety and friendship await Yuri as she is forced to stare life itself in the mouth in her chaotic coming of age.

It really explains most of the events in the anime, and most importantly explains the scene after the credits in the anime
That scene made me go search and read the manga.

I'm reading it now. Geez, the least the anime could have done was give Yuri more lines; the show makes her out to be such a girl of few words, but she speaks plenty here...
I may consider getting the 3 manga and DVD box, might be worth it.
Hmm, this author's note is interesting. Odd!
Spoiler:
Well, I finished the manga now, and have come to the conclusion that maybe it's not all as messed up as one might think: the anime certainly makes one beleive something psychological is the only reason for the story, but the manga proves otherwise.
It's just a very hard sci-fi story, so I suppose I was reading it from the wrong perspective. Then again, it seems it was marketed to audiences from this flawed viewpoint too, but yeah... the manga isn't much "clearer" but it certainly proves that there's more to the story.
