[General] Downloading Manga?
[Why] Do you download manga?
0
How many people actually download manga? It really seems like every thread relating to manga has someone asking for torrents in it. I understand when it's some random and obscure mange or manhwa that would never sell at all in North America (things like "My Balls" come to mind) or if it's something like Gantz that got passed over and has a rather low chance of coming over, but when someone asks for scanlations of things like Bleach or Hellsing it just confuses me. Reading manga on a computer sucks ass. Reading anything other than forum posts on the internet is a chore. Why do so many people here seem to do it?
Edit: Manhwa is Korean manga.

I think reading on computer is easier than an actual book (just click for next page, and cant lose spot)
I only do mainstream mangas if there are later chapters that are translated on the internet but no for retail in the states (ie naruto / bleach)

Reading a manga is just way too short an experience to warrant buying a $10+ volume for me. I can read an entire volume of manga in less than a few hours, so it doesn't really last that long.
I'm not saying that it should be a lower price, though, since it must take a lot of time and effort to create all the art. But if I can get an entire series for free on the internet, buying $10+ for each individual volume seems like a bad choice.
Also, while I do prefer reading manga in book-form, I don't despise reading it on my computer.

The majority of the time I download manga online because it hasn't been released in English yet. And I agree with Biohazard, I can read a volume of manga in 30-45 minutes and that is not worth $10.
However if I absolutely love a series I will buy the manga to support the artist or just to collect it. If I was a rich bastard though I would buy more manga and just put it in a gigantic bookcase :D

But having a book around is much easier cuz u can read anytime you want even when ur travelling or simply waiting for someone you can just grab your manga book out from a pouch bag and ur ready to immerse into a world of manga on ur own and at the same time waiting for someone.

You people really think 10 bucks is too expensive? I don't have a job or any source of income and can afford that. I usually only pick up about two or three volumes a week and that sets me back like 25+ dollars. And all "it adds up" cop outs aside, I think it's a worthy investment. I may think more so than a lot of people because I'm the type of person that collects things but I take pride in having a (soon to be) extensive library of manga.
Also, take the time to appreciate the manga. At school I read about 4 volumes of manga a day (nothing to do all third period and sometimes about half of lunch so that works out to approximately 25 minutes a volume) but at home I take about 3 days to finish a volume of something. I pace myself and focus a lot more on things when I've spent money and I'm not just trying to absorb as much manga as possible. I also like being able to pick the volume up at any point and go through it.
Being able to read fast is a talent but just slaughtering every piece of text I come across isn't typically my goal unless I'm at school.

"It all adds up" isn't a cop out, it's a valid point. I've got only about 22 volumes of manga on my computer, which I got for free. If I had bought all of them, I'd be out $220. Sounds like I got a pretty good deal.
Also, I do take time to appreciate manga. It's not like I'm blazing through it just to get done with it. Five or six text bubbles per page just don't take that long to read.

Sounds like I got a pretty good deal. Let me make it more accurate then, it's a valid point that people abuse to the point that it's a cop out. Not taking into account that it's stealing, buying a few tankoubon to support a series you like isn't any kind of financial burden that anyone can reasonably complain about unless they're destitute or going bankrupt. Like I said, I have no job and I can continuously buy a volume or two every week. I would make a point about supporting the artists and the industry but I don't think enough people actually download manga for it to not come off as pointless preaching.
As an ironic observation, it's interesting that the guy who spent $50 supporting a porn site is the one talking about being frugal on buying manga.

i'm sorry to say this, but i would much rather buy a novel than a manga, and even then it would have to be a damn good book for me to want to buy it... plus finding manga over the internet is much faster and much more efficent than going to a bookstore to get one when they might not even have it, and then end up paying a crapload of money just to buy one precious volume, to only end up trashing it the next day... yeah... i'm done...

Yes, because I'm broke/cheap.
Honestly, I'm both broke and cheap.
I don't collect mangas (and I don't know what will I do to them after I've read them) so reading them on the screen is all fine to me.

I do both (or all three if you include reading off the internet). If I feel like my pocket is thick, I buy manga, especially ones that aren't really too popular in the online reading sites. For one, downloading manga is alot more portable, I can take it on my phone, rather than bringing 100+ volumes of heavy paper around. However I enjoy the feeling of reading manga in book form, although it would be even better if companies would have the decency to use smaller paper, than they wouldn't be so damn expensive.
