If anime & manga never existed

Lets take a moment and imagine that anime & manga never existed. The reason why is besides the point.

Some of us spend a lot of time on anime, manga, and hentai. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just curious as to what you all think you would be doing instead of all the times you were watching anime, reading manga, or fapping to hentai. Do you think your life would have been changed greatly? If so, how and why?

I don't watch anime often, but I read a ton of manga. Accumulated, I probably have spent at least a weeks worth of time reading manga. I didn't do the math obviously, but its a fair estimation.

With that week I probably would have been doing boring things like eating, watching regular t.v., studying, or chores.
My life would probably have been the same.

I would probably be reading more comics, playing more western videogames and watch more TV shows on HBO. I love anime/manga, but I would still be a nerdy individual and life would still go on for me. Am already pretty active and have a decent social life and whatnot so nothing lacking there.

Really though, these questions are silly because if you didn't have something in your life you wouldn't know what you were missing.

Japan Not Japanese
The world would be a much sadder place for me and many other otaku as the fandom is such a big part of my life now I would really have no hobbies that interest me anymore. Sad, but anime is life. :P

Life probably would've been a little less depressing.

I'd simply be playing video games. Not much else would be different, really.

Best way to put it. I would be more into comics or games or other stuff, but like Freaky said, if it never happened in the first place, then we wouldn't know what it was really like to miss it.

What you're passionate about is never the point. It's being passionate that's what matters.

We would be Slammed by advertisement's and video games would not exist :( ( Such a Scary Topic )

I think i'd only play games that's all

I would probably dedicate more time watching movies. Since that is what I do when I'm not watching animu or playing games.

To even imagine a world without Anime/Manga you can either postulate that
a) there would be no narrative whatsoever in any country including Japan but that would be a quite a weird thought experiment since telling stories either about real or fictional events is hardwired into us as humans or
b) that Japan never develops the artistic talents needed to be so famous as to export their characteristic narrative overseas or simply develops no particular narrative style.
In the case of latter im guessing we would simply find some other show or activity to satiate our need/desire to listen to stories be them tv/cinema/books/theatre/etc. as i believe that we all love hearing tales.
Obviously some are more inclined to listen to someone else's tale and some others prefer being their own protagonists and do not care for fiction or history but i like to think that all civilizations need a storyteller as we simply can't limit ourselves to what we experience with our eyes and hears.
So in the end imagining a nation without a storytelling media is a bit hard for me :V

Or Japan's drawing style would be the same as western style.

We'll all be stuck with cartoons/comics that involves cute talking animals, anthros and muscular heroes.

I just started watching anime recently so I don't think the change would affect me very much. I do have to admit I would be sad about never being able to discover the joy of watching the series I have watched so far.

It's impossible to accurately predict what would happen if something that exists never existed in the first place. The butterfly effect in timelines and all that.

But it's fun to imagine!

I wouldn't have discovered Pokémon, Digimon or Cardcaptors on TV, which means I'd have focussed more on Robot Wars, The Simpsons and possibly Now That's What I Call Music, as was the rage at the time.

When I went to Canada when I was 11 I wouldn't have discovered Monster Rancher and the 2 girls I met out there (who were my aunt's friend's daughters) who didn't like me because I was not only a boy, but I was also fat and ugly at the time, I wouldn't have started afresh with them because Pokémon Yellow wouldn't exist, so we'd have nothing to bond over and they wouldn't have apologised for being cunts. And I wouldn't be quizzing my relatives today over who they were or why we went to their house in the first place, because I have a terrible memory, or asking for their surnames so I can Facebook stalk them.

If my friend's sister and I coincidentally volunteered at the same charity shop at the same time in this timeline, we'd simply have slightly less to talk about during downtime.

Otherwise since I didn't become a frequent viewer of anime until 3 years ago when I got into Hentai it wouldn't have affected me much. I'd have indulged in another type of porn since Hentai wouldn't exist.

I'd be watching more tv, wouldn't get into computer programming, no interest in learning Japanese, probably wouldn't write stories and might not play video games as much. Most of my time spent online is done reading manga, so I'd be on you tube more often if it didn't exist. I guess I'd also turn to comic books.

It's not sad. Anime and manga are stories that you're enjoying. They might be exaggerated, but lets remember that they were created by some author and might be related his or her own experiences.

This might be a stretch, but what I'm trying to say is that anime/manga can be valuable or somewhat meaningful because they entertain, teach, inspire, and may even influence you.

If it never existed, I would just stay exclusive to video games since it's what I started off with anyway. Though I will say now that a world without anime and manga would be a fucked up world. I wouldn't stay in it for long.

Where would I be if anime and manga never existed? I would probably read way more books. Being a bookworm instead of anime and manga nerd. Maybe Marvel, Cartoon or Drama nerd. No question about me being a nerd but it would just have been in other areas and fields. Probably Chinese dramas or Western Cartoons. I loved to read Western comics too when I was younger so probably that way? I don't think I would change much though, maybe my language of interest would have changed to French or Cantonese instead of Japanese. Even though anime and manga take up A BIG part of my life, if it didn't exist I would probably find something else to fill that out instead.
