According to the light novels, Kazuma was a much much darker character compared to his cynical sarcastic self in the anime. And I felt the explanation of his past and the conclusion to be half-assed. I still loved the series though.

I think its the most underrated anime I've watched in years. It severely needs a second season.

Well the novels cover a much more elapsed time. Also it's certainly not over considering the main Evil guy is still alive and has a new plot. They left the ending Open and If I remember correctly there was a talk about a new season though I don't know when. Might have seen it on Anidb.net or somewhere else.
Either way I really liked the series at the time. Though I felt that it could have been more focused on Kazuma's past than in some filler episodes (like the onsen one).

Having an open ending gives me some hope of a season 2, then agian most animes fail in giving that. I loved this series because of the plot (mostly because I like the idea of coming back to embarrass the bullies from his family before).

...hhhmm I actually never finished this one, honestly does it really need a second season? If so i'll go back and finish watching it.

Sorry guys but while I might be spoiled by the amount of anime I watched, I found KnS fairly bad.
It started off solid. We got a badass main male lead who kicked anyones ass and asked questions later. They wasted him though. Ayano was wasted as well - she was fun and energetic but they never allowed her to become more than a comical relief/fanservice character. But the main reason I'm disappointed with the show was Ren. God - how I hated that kid and his silly story ...
My opinion only - no offense meant 8)

I didn't think of it was "pretty good" either. BUt I did appreciate the plot because I read its novel. I have to agree with how they wasted the characters. If you read the novel it would have been fairly gruesome.
