New ANIME SUGGESTION LIST

READ EVERYTHING BELOW.

Basically the other suggestion list is never going to be updated (it's been almost 4 years), so it's time someone made a new one.

I want everyone's help in deciding what should go on the list. I'd like you to post your suggestions. You can post as many as you like, however I want you to give a reason why you think it should be considered for the list. If you don't give me a reason I will ignore your suggestion; you've picked it as being worthy for the list, so there must be a reason for you having listed it. And do it without spoiling anything - remember, you're suggestion anime that people may not have seen before as a recommendation, so there's no need to spoil it. A basic plot outline is fine. Example of what not to do:

- anime #1
- anime #2
- anime #3

Don't just do this. Give reasons.

I'd also like people to help me out by commenting on what other people suggest, since I'm not claiming to be some all knowing anime overlord of the site who picks and chooses what I want for the list. This is a list for everyone, so please consider each other's suggestions (that is, agreeing or disagreeing), while also keeping everyone in mind. Vague comments like "it's good" or "it's shit" don't count. I'll also be giving my own opinions as well. Also, don't bother posting that one image of all those recommended anime. I want community suggestions and suggestions of anime you yourselves have seen along with your own opinions of a series.

I've been wondering how I should present the list. I still think the genre thing is good, but there definitely needs to be a shorter list. But anime have more than one genre, so it might be difficult. Please give me your suggestions on how I should present the list.

One way of presenting the list is have a part for currently airing and recently completed series. When I look for things that aired in the last year to put in my backlog, having a list of popular series would be useful. People often use the 3 episode rule to determine if an anime is worth watching to the end. I think it would be useful to define the length of the first arc in the suggestion list since sometimes the first arc is shorter/longer and I think the first solid plot piece is a better measuring tool for a series. For series with lots of censorship, stating that the BD/DVD removes some censorship is worth noting too.

I'm not sure what to do with genre's either. A sufficient plot outline should describe the genre to readers.

Example:
Spring 2014
No Game No Life: Adapted from the light novels of the same name by Kamiya Yuu. No Game No Life (NGNL) follows the story of hikikomori siblings Sora and Shiro as they attempt to save the human race and face God in world called Disboard. Instead of fighting wars though, everything is Disboard is decided by games. For Sora and Shiro otherwise known as "Kuuhaku", the undefeated gamer of our world, this proves to be the perfect challenge.

Considering that the lead characters are undefeated gamer siblings, one of the first things that come to mind is the "all according to plan" trope. Thankfully NGNL does not follow the same formula in its plot advancing games repeatedly. Kamiya Yuu did a solid job in making the games unique to Disboard but still easy for the audience to understand. The anime follows through with that as well.

While comparisons have been made to Mondaiji-tachi regarding the fantasy world setting and games, the characters and storyline are far too different to call one a copy of the other. The anime is only 12/13 episodes which covers the first 3 light novels. No Game No Life is certainly one of the most popular anime of the spring 2014 season and recommended for anyone who is interested in the premise.

The translated light novels are on Baka-tsuki.
First arc: The first 4 anime episodes cover the first light novel volume.
BD/DVD: Not out yet.

Yosuga no Sora: In Solitude, Where We Are Least Alone.

Synopsis
Haruka Kasugano and his twin sister Sora have lost both their parents in an accident, and with them all their support. They decide to move out of the city to the rural town where they once spent summers with their late grandfather. At first everything seems familiar and peaceful, but changes come as Haruka starts to remember things from his youth.
Adapted from a Visual novel of the same name and then made into a Manga. Basic a harem driven novel with wincest and a minor moment of NTR.

BD rips are fansubbed with no plans of a English dub in the current list. Rated 17+ since there sex and nudity plus dat lovely sister incest we all need in a imaginary setting and not the one in the next room.

Love Hina

Synopsis
Keitaro Urashima promised a girl when he was young that they would meet up again at Tokyo University in the future. Sadly, in the National Practice Exam, Keitaro ranked 27th from the bottom. Knowing his grandmother owned a hotel, Keitaro intended to stay there while continuing his studies for Tokyo U, only to find out the hotel had long been transformed into an all-girls dormitory. Through an odd twist of fate, Keitaro eventually became the manager of the dorm, beginning his life of living with 5 other girls.

Sadly this series wasn't transferred to BD nor any special body parts showed in the dvds, but still a great read and watch with the ecchi/slapstick you need for a good laugh. Manga was better then the anime but the specials and the idol ep was still worth the watch. 13+ with many, many, MANY doujinshi and ero games made for it. NARU IS MY OLDEST WAIFU. Series was dubbed.

Video Girl Ai

Synopsis
When Youta is told by the girl he likes, Moemi, that she likes someone else, he rents a video girl tape from a strange video rental shop. When he plays the tape at home, Video Girl Ai emerges from the screen to help him win Moemi's love. But Yohta's VCR had been malfunctioning and now Ai's personality isn't quite what it was designed to be.

T_T I spend a long hour reading this and watching them on my 6th gen vhs tapes with shit yellow weeaboo subs in my youth. No BD but im sure there a dvd rip somewhere. Was dub a while ago with some nudity and doki doki romance.

I will add more later after some others get a chance to do this.

This is going to take a while....

First of all separate the movies and ovas from the series. And the categorize them by the dominate genre. For example: Steins;gate should be labeled as a mystery or science fiction anime.

//basic list
// MAL hyperlinks will be placed on all titles, if you want a summary - go there!

PERSONAL FAVORITES
Bakemonogatari - and sequels

Bakemonogatari is 15 episode harem anime from 2009, produced by Shaft. It marks the beginning of the 'tropes' Shaft is known for their later works. It's also written by Nisio Isin, famous for his work Katanagatari.

What makes Bakemono different from other harem shows is it's eccentric style it gets by the absence of unimportant characters and the choice of colors, usually leaning for few very bright colors.

If you aren't familiar with Nisio Isin, he has made a name for himself for his lengthy and witty dialogues which are both present in Bakemono. This is the reason why you might not like it.
Scenes sometimes stretching for several minutes with nothing but dialogues. What makes this a godsend is how well written the dialogues and interactions really are.
So get ready for 15 episodes of verbal abuse, puns going over your head and sexually suggestive but uncomfortable scenes. Hitagimuhuwaifu

Welcome To The NHK

Welcome to the NHK
is a 24 episode psychological anime from 2006. It addresses issues with obsessions mentioning; drug abuse, online gaming, anime and porn.
I think it portrays a scared hikikomori very well. It might even motive you to do something with your life

Mushishi

Mushishi is a 26 episode mystery anime from 2005, produced by Artland. This is a very calm and relaxing show. If you're allergic to drama then this probably isn't for you.

Mushishi uses a new type of animal called mushi to explain all the abnormal things happening to the people in Japan around Sengoku period. But most of the time you can easily remove mushi from the formula and replace it with neglect
or other similar relationship issues (for a lack of better word). And this is where the strengths of Mushishi lies. Namely Ginko's ways of restoring relationships and trying his best to do the morally correct thing even if it means sacrificing something for it.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Like Waar said a long time ago "After GTO you feel like punching god, because you can" (or something like that)

Great Teacher Onizuka is a 43 episode comedy anime from 1999. About a former biker gang leader trying to become Japan's best teacher. He's giving a class filled with delinquents to deal with and he does so using some rather unorthodox teaching methods.
After every episode you'll feel pumped up as hell. I forgot to mention that it's hilarious. Try Golden Boy if you want a similar experience with a smaller episode count but a bigger focus on pervertedness. MY CRESTA!!!

OTHER FAVORITES
// These are all very popular. Someone else write something about them please....
Nichijou

One of the funniest animöjs.
Neon Genesis Evangelion

The quintessential anime of 1990's. I liked it a lot. Even if it can feel a little bit dated.
Spice and wolf

>I'm watching it for the economics.
I'd understand if this didn't make it to the list but come on it's Horo.
Angel Beats

ALL ABOARD THE FEELSTRAIN CHUU CHUU. [size=5]Dead Girls Monster[/h]
Fate/Zero

EVERYDAY UNTIL YOU LIKE IT!
Cowboy Bebop

Glorious Jazz music.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Penis.
Clannad

Everyone likes After Story more.
Durarara!!

You're watching this because of Izaya and Shizou.
Baccano

Excellent story telling and music.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica

This is a story about happy magical magical girls OH WAI-
Code Geass

Awesome introduction. Great action scenes with strategy elements to it. One of the villains half way through the first season is very lacking, he's just a terrible villain. And the second season will also come with mixed opinions as it feels distanced from where the original story was going. But boy does the ending make up for it.
Katanagatari

Very likable characters. Interesting arcs. Everything is just good.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Comedy made by Shaft. A good one with that. Has the weird psychedelic stuff Shaft is known for.
The Tatami Galaxy
Samurai Champloo

Samurai anime with a slice of pop culture.
Usagi Drop

The second best thing next to Yotsuba. It's just adorable.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

I HATE IT!

UNDERRATED (as by MAL's score)
Kemonozume

Kemonozume is a 13 episode supernatural romance anime from 2006, directed by Yuasa, Masaaki. The story is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet but it gets more complicated as the episode count increase. But the reason why you should even bother with Kemonzume is because of the unique (kinda sloppy looking) art style, looking similar to that of Kill Bill. Try Tatami Galaxy and Kaiba of you like this, made by the same dude.

Steamboy

Excellent production with a interesting but shallow plot.
Haibane Renmei

Haibane Renmei is a 13 episode fantasy (with a bit of slice of life) anime, directed by Tokoro, Tomokazu, who also worked on Serial Experiment Lain and Hellsing Ultimate. If you like angel girls drinking tea, then this is perfect for you. That being said Haibane is much more than just a slice of life anime as you'll learn by Rakka's dark past. And that's the thing with Haibane is that it turns really gothic half way. Which I personally didn't mind.

Golden Boy

What if GTO was more perverse and funnier. Well here you have it. It's short but sweet.
Serial Experiments Lain

Well then. What the fuck did I just watch.

WATCHABLE
Azumanga Daioh

One of the earlier examples of slice of life anime. It has it's funny moments.
Darker Than Black

I was disappointed in this. I still enjoyed what I saw though. Action anime with supernatural powers involved.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

I laughed. Some people are really hateful towards this though.
Elfen Lied

It has really great action scenes but there's so few of them. And the rest is so shitty.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

Made on american cartoons but with some anime tropes.
Kara no Kyoukai

Pretensions story with godlike production. It looks fucking awesome.
Hyouka

A decent slice of life anime with a bit of mystery in it. I'M CURIOUS!
Toradora

One of the better romance anime. It goes on for too long though but if you're into this sorta thing.
Beck

A really cool music anime. You follow a guitar and singer trying to get into a band and all that jazz. Slice of life btw.

Can't you present it alphabetically and writing the genre in a () next to the title like:

Ao no exorcist (Shounen, Action, etc, etc)
Arakawa under the bridge (comedy, .., .. this series genre omg I don't even)

I dunno what to do with the plot though.

Well I would recommend Nodame Cantabile it is about music, romance and college life or just slice of life. It is pretty realistic and super sweet and since I'm a sucker for classic music so I found it very enjoyable. The romance level is not overly shoujo, though since it is a shoujo it is unavoidable! The romance is not only your typical shoujo love but it has a lot of nice and funny moment too. Because the main heroine is a bit weird. The character development is really nice too and I really felt the character develop through out the series. But be aware the art might not be the prettiest ever, it is quite simple but the instruments are really accurate if I have to say so myself~ I think I rewatched it 4 times and reread it 4 times ^^);
2
So yeah... Incoming obvious recommendations.

Steins;Gate:

Steins;Gate is the second instalment of the science adventure series, which includes Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes, based on the visual novels by Nitro+ and 5pb. It follows 18 year old Okabe Rintarou, who suffers from Chuunibyou and masquerades as the Mad Scientist Hououin Kyouma, and his future gadget lab, where they attempt to create a gadget that will bring down the ruling structures of the planet, however “Supah Hakah” Hashida Daru and Okabe’s ditzy childhood friend/“hostage” Shiina “Mayushii” Mayuri are less than enthusiastic. One such invention sets us on the road to Mystery and Sci-fi adventure, the Phone Microwave, which had the special ability of turning Bananas into green gel. However, all is not as it seems when the Phone Microwave is discovered to be able to send texts to the past…

Steins;Gate is by far one of the best anime I have ever seen, the characters are portrayed extremely well, and the world built around them is both fantastical and yet believable and engaging. The story, while having a somewhat slow start, picks up entirely and makes you unwilling to stop watching.

Fooly Cooly (FLCL):

Fooly Cooly is a masterpiece of a metaphor for adolescence and puberty, following Naoto for six episodes of interesting and crazy plot as he is constantly dragged into craziness by a strange woman called Haruka and his brother’s girlfriend Mamimi. Fooly Cooly is another one of my favourite anime, with a spectacular soundtrack and amazing animation. The story is excellent if a little confusing and it’s definitely worth the watch.

In the process of moving out of my dorms within the next week so I will reply to each of you then. Thanks for the suggestions on the list layout and recommendations so far. Keep this thread moving.

I should mention that descriptions and reasons for anime you give won't be going on the list - there will be links to the synopsis's of all the anime. Your reasons and descriptions are for considerations for the list. Also the descriptions without having spoilers are for anyone reading/contributing to the thread who may not have seen the show yet.

I'll do my best to explain. Though I dont think i will do a good job. Links are for better summaries.

Genshiken

Sasahara Kanji is a college freshman who joins a club called Genshiken,(Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture). What resides in the club are people who share the same likes: Games, Anime and Manga. What happens really is just going through college life in the club.

Genshiken is an anime that many people can relate to. It is 12 episodes and has a second season, Genshiken Nidaime. It is very Slice of Life as it follows a group of college kids that likes games, anime and manga.
This anime is good for those that want a break from other types of anime and just want a very basic show. As said, many can relate to the characters as they can be going through the same thing. Nothing special happens. Just going through life.

C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

Kimimaro is a basic student all around. What he wants is to live a stable life. However that changes when his future is held as a collateral and he then enters the Financial District.

Those who like money should try this anime. Money is the point, it is the main focus. I find this anime very interesting. It is very unique with the Financial District and the battles that are known as Deals. Although I did get confused a little bit here and there, the show was still enjoyable.
This anime has 11 episodes. Though it may sound short, it can get the story done.

MM!

Sado is a high school student who tries to live a normal life. However that does not happen as he is a very different person from everyone else. He gets pleasure from pain, otherwise known as a masochist.

This is a 12 episode, comedy anime. Though I would say this is not for everyone. Many of the characters are unique. Sado is a masochist, one is androphobic (fear of men)and there are few more. The only reason i say this is not for everyone because some may not like that everyone has something abnormal about them. There are maybe 1?? normal character(dont take my word for that). There are some episodes where it goes over the top, one episode has a complete power up parody, but if people don't mind that stuff, give it a try.

Tiger & Bunny

In this world, Heroes are there for crimes and such, but also for entertainment. The show called HeroTV broadcasts everytime a crime happens and it shows the heroes who attempt to resolve it. Here there are special people with powers, known as a NEXT. These people can become heroes and entertain people or maybe become a villian instead.

This is a 25 episode, action and comedy anime. I honestly thought it would be about something else with the title "Tiger & Bunny". Never expected to have alot of action. Now don't let the title fool you like it did to me. It has a unique view of heroes. Heroes are there for other people. But some become heroes for entertainment.

_______________________________

If you are looking for a series that is pretty short and simple. try some of these.

Miss Monochrome

Following a android named Miss Monochrome, what she aims to do is to become a idol.

13 episodes and every episode is 4 minutes. This was a original character by Seiyuu Horie Yui. She voiced characters like Tohru Honda-Fruits Basket, Kaga Koko-Golden Time, Narusegawa Naru- Love Hina. The idea is very simple, an android wanting to become a idol. She goes through many things trying to become a idol. Since she is an android she many not see things like a normal person would.
If you like the Seiyuu Horise Yui, definitely try this. Comedy and short. Something to watch when you have nothing else to watch.

Tonari no Seki-kun

Centers around 2 high school characters, Seki-kun and Yokoi. Yokoi wants to concentrate in class but her neighbor Seki is always playing around ranging for shogi to getting his driver's license.

21 Episodes, each about 8 minutes(if i recall correctly) I read the manga for this so I knew I would watch it. It is very simple, Yokoi is trying to concentrate and Seki is always playing with something. Sometimes that something is something you would not normally play in class. You wanna watch something short and funny, try this.

I should mention that if there are no disputes about a recommended series then it will be put on the list.

So if we don't think a certain show that is recommended should go on the list and explain why, it might not go on the list?

Depends how many people disagree with it going on there. The thread would work better with more people, but there's so many lurkers. I guess we'll just see what happens. It's up to everyone to make this thread work.

No list from me yet, but I'm actually thinking of making imgur galleries (like those for films) filled with anime recommendations for the current season. At the very least, it can help updating the list with newer anime easier, I believe. How's that sound?

as for the suggestions, i'll just add my vote to Great Teacher Onizuka. When life gets unsolvable, stuff happening that's way out of your comfort zone, just watching how Onizuka Eikichi takes his shit and deals with it has a rejuvenating effect on your spirit and makes it easier to breathe. Even talking about this show feels good.

Have you seen Whisper of the heart yet? The Cat Returns is a spin off of it. Whisper of the heart is kinda boring but that's how romance movies usually are so it's okay.

Yuri have you considered categorizing them by year/season?

If you haven't seen the post above, I am currently in the process of moving out of my dorm. I move out tomorrow. I will reply to all of you hopefully over the weekend, if not then early next week.

Thanks for the suggestions and tips so far.

No list from me yet, but I'm actually thinking of making imgur galleries (like those for films) filled with anime recommendations for the current season. At the very least, it can help updating the list with newer anime easier, I believe. How's that sound?

That sounds awesome, link me when you can.

Example:
Spoiler:

Thanks for the suggestion. The currently airing series is something I'm definitely going to incorporate, and possibly recently completed series. I'll have it sectioned at the top of the list. Regarding plot, I think I'll use Ryssen's idea of simple MAL links. As for the censoring, BD/DVD highlighting idea, I would like to try and somehow include this, but it will probably be something I will add once the basic framework for the list is up.

First of all separate the movies and ovas from the series. And the categorize them by the dominate genre. For example: Steins;gate should be labeled as a mystery or science fiction anime.

//basic list
// MAL hyperlinks will be placed on all titles, if you want a summary - go there!

I'll do the MAL linking thing, as well as separating movies and OVAs, but how should I present that? Should I put in brackets next to the series title that it's a movie or OVA? Also, I'm going to need help in listing a succinct genre list.

Can't you present it alphabetically and writing the genre in a () next to the title like:

Ao no exorcist (Shounen, Action, etc, etc)
Arakawa under the bridge (comedy, .., .. this series genre omg I don't even)

Thanks for the suggestion. It's an idea, but it's not very user-friendly or presentable in my opinion. It would end up looking more random.

Yuri have you considered categorizing them by year/season?

I actually like this idea, but I think I'll try the other stuff first.

I should apologise to people as I didn't make it clear what the purpose of writing your own synopsis was for. The reason I wanted people to write their own synopsis was so they could present a kind of argument and suggestion as to why the series should go on the list, and that they shouldn't contain spoilers simply for anyone else reading the thread - 'anyone' being lurkers or contributors who have not seen said series. These were never to go on the list, I was planning to link to a synopsis for each series.

Thanks for all the anime suggestions so far everyone, I will begin making the list soon. Any other suggestions for how the list should be presented that people have just leave a post. And keep posting any anime suggstions you may have, along with a reason why.
