So I watched a couple episodes of Hikaru no Go...

AHHHhh me too! I wanted to play Go so bad after I read through the manga, and I saw one last weekend at Barnes and Noble. I know you can download some programs that run just like the game but I never really won... ever.
But I haven't watched the anime yet, but I recommend checking out the manga.

 Yeah i had that same thought at the time, though i originally saw it because i was at a local Japanese society event. And that was the local Go clubs advertisement for it.

This is the freakiest coincidence ever. I watched all of Hikaru no Go in a span of about 3 days (and it's a 75 episode series) and though I felt a lot like playing Go I never did. Then a few days ago I got the urge to go back to playing Mahjong since I stopped playing for a while. Then I played a few rounds and got pissed since all the people playing were winning on dirt cheap hands while I was trying to construct (and succeeding at doing so) a nice whopper of one. So I'm like "Fuck this shit!" and went to play online Go. And I've been playing for like an hour and a half every day since.
I'm slightly above beginner level but I still can't beat a 19-20 kyu computer without a 3 stone handicap meaning I'm at about 22-23 kyu (the lower the kyu the better you are) which is weak but improving since 30 is the lowest.

Go is just Othello japanese style ><I remember at one point in Hikaru no Go when Hikaru says to Sai "Akari can't even tell the difference between Go and Othello." and upon looking it up on wikipedia it seems like a considerably different game. The piece and board look similar though.

So anyway, I bought a Go board and a beginner's book. Though, in retrospect, it seems kind of a waste since I don't know anyone else that plays it. >_>
Do have a link to that, blind? It would be much appreciated.

I can't remember exactly where I got the download but it was from this site I think Go website. It was either that or a site that it linked to.

[quote="Biohazard"]Thanks, blind.
I just played a game on a 13x13 with the computer set at the lowest level...and man, do I suck. >_>
But I think there's something wrong here. Isn't all this (the parts marked in red) supposed to count towards my score (I'm black)?

no, you have to completely surround the other pieces, the edge doesn't subsitute as pieces. For example, on the lower left of the first image, you only have it surounded on one side, you would need to get a piece on A-2 and B-1 to capture it. Also, On the second pic the white player didn't get your piece on D-12 because there is no piece on C-12
I haven't had the chance to watch Hikaru no Go, but i have been playing Go for a while now... though, i'm not all that good XP

Unless you've got them in position where if it played out at all then you'd kill them. The edge doesn't count if it's a large enough area but when your opponent is really pinned and can't move without digging the hole further then you get the points. In the situation you have there it's just contested space.
Edit: just looked at white's capture count and all I can say is ouch. Not that it's all that surprising for a total newbie but after I lose more than 7-8 pieces I tend to resign unless I have a massive amount of territory or have capture at leas 4-5 pieces and can recover the 3-4 moku difference.

This game is lying dammit, and I can prove it!

The territory in the bottom-left should count towards black's score. I guess it doesn't factor in territories with dead stones. I recreated this game from that beginner's book I was talking about if you were wondering.
Oh and I figured out the main problem with that other game (even though I'm sure there were very very many >_>). I was focusing way too much on capturing and failed miserably.
Back to Hikaru no Go...I got bored and stopped watching at episode 10. Should it get better anytime soon?

It gets considerably more interesting when Hikaru actually learns how to play and isn't just letting Sai beat the shit out of Touya. Though the show never actually gets unbelievably interesting. I just marathoned it because I'm bored with the current anime season (I watched it right at the end of last season and just before the current one and there wasn't anything on the horizon) and I also have weird taste in anime. I also wanted to compare it to Akagi and I think I liked Akagi better. At least Akagi was an unbeatable god of Mahjong on his own and didn't need to rely on a ghost for his skill.
In summation, watch Akagi for a more exciting pseudo-sport anime but Hikaru no Go is a good anime.

I was just disappointed that the anime couldn't even complete the series. It was probably only a few episodes away, but it was still a good series regardless.
After watching Hikaru no Go, I went out and bought a go board. Played for quite awhile and I think I was pretty good, but then it kind of got boring without too many people to play against and I kind of just stop playing.
