Hmm, dunno, I'm currently watching hajime no ippo and one piece, both of which are long and not so recent(although one piece is ongoing). I can however suggest you not bother with Kanon which Phrozen suggested. I don't remember it well, but I do remember thinking it was much more on the mediocre to crappy side.

Watching Clannad, didn't really get into Kanon. Not huge on drama.

I added one to that list, though I've seen a lot of them. Noein was the only one that struck my interest when reading plot summaries.
Note that I do not enjoy "cutesy" anime.

I can't believe I forgot to put in Seirei no Moribito. One of my favorites from last season. I believe the last epi was just subbed.

I see you added Initial D to the list. If you haven't watched it, check it out. Personally I'm not that into racing but I found it a pretty enjoyable show from what I watched.

I reconmend Initial D because it is one of my favorite anime of all time. This show got me interested in cars when I was 19 and no prior interest in them plus after playing the arcade game I got hooked into a circle of Eurobeat, Arcade game, Series where doing one would cause me to want to do one of the others.
