depends on the size of the con, if it a small one then cheap anime and manga via used is on your side, large ones like anime expo or otakon you might find some but 95% is regular price but a big assortment of them, go to see cosplay freaks ie manfyre, eat, buy stuff, meet a girl, go to her room ... the rest is censored

reserved your tickets and hotel room early if cheaper and if you going to a big con they run out fast. when to comic con 08 had to sleep on the beach, no tent and shower at a truck stop, met some people, got the couch for the last two days.

well if its a con with a fairly large dealer's room then wait till the last day or 2nd to last day to buy things. They might sell them for a lower price.

Like everyone else is saying, the size of the con matters. It also depends on if it is being held at a convention center or a hotel (at least here in the U.S.) so I can't really give any real solid advice. From my experiences though it goes a little something like this:
1. Get there early to avoid waiting to pick up your pre-reg badge or to buy tickets.
2. Browse the dealers room: Usually the anime is about the same price that you would find at a Best Buy, so no real deals, though you may be able to find some cool stuff in the bargain bins. Deals on manga are always happening though and depending on how good you are at haggling you can get figures for a relatively cheap price.
3. Avoid idiots: That should be self-explanitory.
4. Panels: Make sure to go to as many of the ones that interest you as you can. Keep tabs on the programming guide too and try to find out about any changes in panel times.
5. Host panels if you have any (bonus points if you get talked to by con staff for having Rapeman in your panel even though the panel is 18+).
6. Artists alley: You can get some cool stuff drawn for you and meet some awesome people.
7. Hang out with bros and take it easy, while taking it easy try to meet some new people.
8. Check out the gaming room
9. Go out to a karaoke bar and sing powerful songs.
10. Go to either your home/hotel room or one of your friend's, whoever has the biggest space really.
11. Drink and/or have a fighting game tourney.

That was all spread out over the course of 3 days with some overlaps. You should get the idea though. You should also listen to what someone said in this thread about bringing your own food, if you don't then just go out somewhere to eat. It'll be way cheaper.

Here's something you should NOT do at an anime convention.... Pull the mother-#^(+!%& fire alarm. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Otakon attendee... Hope you die of AIDS in a fire with a (@(+ in your mouth.
ANYway... Anime cons are what you make of them. With the smaller ones you're kind of stuck with whatever they have. The bigger ones, though, have so much that it's really up to you. What are you interested in?
If you're going to stay over the entire con, or live nearby, the most important advice anyone here has given so far is to preregister and pick up your badge the day before the con opens. If you think you can just stroll up to the registry line at 9a.m. the day of show and walk right in, you're seriously overestimating the average convention staffer's abilities. My brother came to Otakon this year. He got on line Friday morning at 7:30a.m. and still wound up waiting 3 hours.
Every con is different but they all give out miniature schedules when you get your registration badge. This is another perk of getting your badge early. I usually sit down the night before the con and mark down or highlight the things I want to see at the con. That way you can make a tentative plan and figure out how much time you have to go back to your room if needed, go get food, travel across the con, get on lines early for popular events, etc... And, if you can't figure out what to do at a certain time, it's a good place to go do filler junk. For example, I'm not a big video game guy when it comes to cons but I'll usually go check out the room at least once if there's nothing going on for a half hour to an hour in between events.
The only events I've ever been disappointed with at anime conventions have been the panels. The first few years I went I checked out quite a number of them and, by and large, they were unprofessional, boring, and, in a lot of cases, whorish (come down to the Dealer's room and buy my crap!) and / or self-serving. No, they're not all like that, but a heck of a lot of them are. If you're going to go to a panel, make sure you're prepared for this stuff and try to have a back-up plan in case it's unbearable. A lot of them fall WAY short of their allotted time so, if you didn't bother to mark anything else down, you'll be sitting around with your thumb up your butt feeling largely dissatisfied.
So, to summarize my advice:
- Preregister
- Pick up your badge Thursday (the day before the con)
- Never overestimate the competence of volunteers
- Mark off the things that sound interesting and loosely plan your time
- Keep your schedule flexible (because they always wind up changing times or canceling things)
- Panels are unpredictable, so have a back-up plan
- Don't be a jackass and do something like pull the fire alarm
The rest is completely up to you. Anime cons are built to provide a lot for people to do, so what you SHOULD do at them is entirely up to you. Heck, a lot of times if the con is in an interesting area you'll even spend time with friends AWAY from the con. All up to you.
