You know the drill, ladies and gents; it's just like the 'Who's the most badass villain in anime' thread but reversed. Name your favorite do-gooders and convince us of their awesomeness!
First up on my list is Subaru Nakajima, of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. Subaru is one of several characters I personally idolize due to her dedication to changing herself and becoming stronger, not in a Goku/Vegeta sense, but in the sense of becoming a person who can be proud of what she is and what she has accomplished.
Second is Hiraga Saito of Zero no Tsukaima. At first this may seem like something of an odd choice; Saito's a very ordinary guy most of the time, with zero magical potential and a distinct lack of a spine where Louise is concerned (I'm still waiting for him to snap and smack her upside the head a few times). It is in fact that very lack of extraordinary qualities that makes him so easy to identify with and admire for those heroic moments he does have every now and then. For christ's sake, he has blatantly perverted thoughts about the girls around him (Louise aside) in damn near every episode! But if there's an enemy to be faced or an army in need of vanquishing, hand him a weapon and get the fuck out of the way!
Third is Archer, of Fate/Stay Night. The living embodiment of all things GAR (Fuck off, Guts), Archer... well, he's Archer. Really, there's not much more I can say that doesn't become obvious just by watching F/SN.
So... I've said my peace, who's up next?

A character I'd like to mention would be Rushuna Tendo, the main heroine of Grenadier.
Even though she could place a bullet in your head in the blink of an eye, she tries to avoid fighting at all costs.
A lovely character, unbelievable fighting skills and a cleavage which makes the grand canyon tremble in enviousness, ... and two(2) fucking doujins is all I was able to find about her, what the fuck... er, where was I?
Oh, right... but my favorite hero from any anime I've seen so far would be... let's just call him "Zero" from Code Geass.
I'm not even sure if he earns the title of a "hero", since his intentions become more and more questionable with further progress, but his unreal abilities to determine a battle's outcome with his strategic mastermind really impressed me.
I've never been so touched from an anime like when he had his conflicts with Mao.
Trembling from suspense to being moved to tears, this guy gave me everything.
I would post more about him, but he's so awesome I can't even describe it.

I fucking love Rushuna. I haven't even started my list of heroes/heroines, but she's up there. She's kind of like an extremely busty female Vash. None will ever come close to her unmatched reloading skills.

Guys: Usopp from One Piece. What an amazing character made even more epic 'cause he is voiced by the guy who did Ranma.
Gals: The Major from Ghost in the Shell. This was a very close fight, it was either her or that girl from 12 Kingdoms Story, but she edged out in the end (lols).
