Why do people hate on dubs so much?

It can be a big problem.
There are certain lines translated that can completely change the way you view the story, even certain small parts.
Subs are more favorable not only because of original voice acting, but because you can see it almost translated to the right context, word for word, even if subs differ a bit from translator to translator.
With dubs, not only do you have to translate it, you have translate it and file it down to match the timing of the animation. In which case, certain words or little phrases that are/can be essential to the story can be missed.
Also, cost wise, what can be bought for cheap is made a little more expensive with dubs. I'm not saying that its a bad thing. But considering it would be cheaper to just sub rather than spend time and money on voice actors who (most?) people don't like. This does not apply to manga haha, as its essential to translate it. However,
it does apply to translated video games.

the only anime i saw that was dubbed better then the original was "Sorcerous Stabber Orphen". American voice-actors changed half of the talking but that was alot more lively and funnier then the jap-loli sounds and boring reactions.
As for everything else - people above summed it up very well.
ah yes, i agree with you Harmonian. It has a mysterious attraction when not understood well. Like with foreign music - you could be joyfuly dancing to drama.

There are a number of Dubs I feel better than Subs. One example where I am all about Dub is "Cowboy Bebop". A large number of anime that I have watched through Sub'd and then heard the Dubs brought me to the conclusion that Dubs sometimes lose the emotions conveyed by the original. It is also largely based on if you started the series Dub'd or Sub'd as to if you are preferable to either from what I have seen. I generally prefer to watch Sub'd though. :p

Well I used to not hate dubs... heck I though It was a good thing having them...
that all changed when I saw 2000 above anime being given local dubs... It made me go WTF and my ears bled...
as for the english dubs... most are not bad... and certain settings just feel more right with english voices so long as the voice actually fit the character...

I really do not care which way I am able to watch anime, though I do have a slight bias. Most dubs aren't that great, very few are: Cowboy Bebop, Orphen, FMP, DBZ, etc. Then there are those anime which IMO should never have been touched: Like Spice and Wolf (Horo's voice in JP was superb and I doubt was correctly reproduced in NA).

From my experience, most people don't like dubs is because 15 years ago, if you can think back to 1995 localized anime, the voice acting was pretty shitty, and the translating could have been a lot better. As the "industry" in the western market has grown a lot since then I've seen a lot better effort these days. Samurai Pizza Cats being an exception to this, though they did have to totally re-write and cut up every thing.
I like anime either subed or dubed. If the voice acting is creative and enthusiastic enough, lately I have preferred to watch it in English because that's the only language I know and fully understand. This makes it easier for me to be more relaxed while watching it. I like authenticism as much as anyone else, but I only know words and small phrases of Japanese so I'm not worried about watching it in English because I won't really notice any difference.
Here's a small list of anime that I find to be great in English:
Golden Boy
Cowboy Bebop(yeah everyone's already mentioned this)
Hellsing(and Ultimate, since it's still Crispin Freeman)
Last Exile
Scrapped Princess
Fooly Cooly
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Point is, this would not have had the same effect for me if I saw it in Japanese.

Because Dubs pale in comparison to Subs in every way, Japanese voice actors give the characters so much more emotion and flare that it's almost impossible for me to watch an anime dubbed. The only series where the dubs were okay were Black Lagoon and DBZ.
Steven Blum is an awesome dub voice actor though. If he is in a series, I'll watch it dubbed because he rocks!

I prefer subs over dub simply because i feel like the dub voices are too soft to hear sometimes, thats when subtitles come in handy, though there are times where the dub voices are so bad that that i accidentally turn off the computer or tv. though i think yugioh has pretty good dub.

ie: Shakugan no Shana Zero no tsukaima, Hayate no Gotoku, toradora

I'm not saying it is a BIG problem, but it happens ALMOST as much as it does in english entertainment. Take the guy who does the voice for Nathan Drake in Uncharted. He does the voice over for EVERYTHING.
Noriaki Sugiyama does the voice for Sasuke from Naruto, the voice for Shirou from F/SN, and the voice of Ishida from Bleach. I'm not annoyed by it, he is a good seiyu and when you're good you're in demand. But some of that immersion is gone when like you mentioned, Taiga sounds like that whining Nagi from Hayate no gotoku.
Like Harmonian said, he doesn't understand it so that is what helps makes it better. I completely understand what he is saying.
Johnny Jong Bosch does pretty much all of the popular anime/game male leads as well as the power rangers.

[color=darkblue]Well done dubs are actually really good, if they can sync the mouth movements and come with a natural speaking style that doesnt sound out of place then I find those enjoyable. Does not bother me that much that some of the voice characters are the same, I actually like them being in various anime so I can relate to the voice better.[/color]

People who hate dubs for no good reason are called "weeaboos". Although dubs used to be almost universally bad, they've gotten so good. It's hard to find a bad one these days. My favorite dub to this day is still Slayers. Second is Cowboy Bebop.

It's not that dubs are bad, it's just that sometimes they kill the character. I remember hearing somewhere that is is 11 weeks between the initial Japanese release and the US release of a single episode of anime. <-- Correct me if I'm wrong on that. In that time because of the internet, fans can find the original Japanese release, fansub it and we get the character as it is originally portrayed, by the original Voice Actor/Actress. We feel that emotion that they bring forth and then the US Release, because of bureaucratic money grubbing whores of cooperation <-- Baseless opinion. Will take what we know to be the original and in turn butcher it. Example 4Kid's TV(see spoiler). Personally I see dubs as one fo two thing's you get an awesome Dub Example Sousuke Sagara voiced by Chris Patton in the English Dub of FMP or horrible as in Naruto Uzumaki voiced by Maile Flanagan. <-- Bias opinion. I like dubbed anime because when something gets heated I don't want to be stuck reading caption's trying to figure out what someone says when something awesome is happening. But there is a point where you can only take so much. I'm not bashing any Voice Actor's I've meet a few of them(The Ayer's Brothers and Chris Patton) these people do it for the love of the job and the love of anime. But bad casting can come into play, thats why I want to say.

Just depends on who's voicing.
Sometimes, they sounds really dreadful. Other times, they're really good.
What I mean by that is they might make a character sound so bad you'll want to head for the hills. It'll completely ruin your views on the character.
So far, the only dubs I can stand to watch are is Ouran...that's it.

it bothers me because if an anime is about japenese people in japan, why the hell would they speak english? it just doesn't feel right watching dubs for those shows. dubs for shows that are not set in japan and where the characters aren't japanese are a little easier for me to take, but then again if i see mismatched lip movements it really pisses me off. and japanese expression, behavior, and culture can't be directly translated. for example, Japanese people usually use the last name when speaking and will only use the first name if the two know each very well. it's very awkward to hear "please call me by my first name" in english.

Purist's what to hear the japanese voices and read the subs, most americans are too lazy to read sub,(i'm american). im not sure why this is the issue since all dvd's have dub and sub on it.
It basely to get it on thing. some dubs are great, most suck. i turn off by dubs just because when i was young i bought the compete set of dbz movies from Malaysia, they talk english like a robot would.
