Subscription costs more than Netflix and Crunchyroll

I don't think it's a good idea to discuss ad revenue without any hard numbers to cite. More importantly I don't think FAKKU is that dumb. I'm more inclined to believe they did the math and decided that the advertisement driven revenue wasn't the way to go. We'll probably never know for sure!

That's my take on it too, a lot people who are upset about the changes and are now making suggestions are assuming that Fakku didn't discuss this endlessly already. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they know their business better than we do.
