Lots of good ideas here. I think if the system were to change, it should be changed to something like this.Yeah, some of the aforementioned posts cover all sorts of ways of de-repping. But the best would be a human moderated system with a heavy penalty behind hitting a de-rep button. When you press it, you must give a reason and it will then be submitted to another system. Someone will then clear the de-reputation as legitimate. Also it stops the person from de-repping and + repping for around 48-72 hours. Quite like the never used report post button.
Here, here! My vote is with Hibia.

This is probably the best suggestion so far as it eliminates the current problems we've been having with -rep but still keeps the rep system relevant. Then again I wouldn't really mind any of the suggestions people have made except for not doing anything and removing the rep system without replacing it with something.

Negative rep definitely isn't needed if you are using rep for the purposes you proposed. On other forums (CTRL+ALT+DEL for example) they use negative rep as a way to ban someone; if it gets too low, you are eventually banned.

I agree with the idea of removing the negative rep. Some people just like to annoy people giving -rep without purpose or maybe because of jelousy... who knows.
However, if the admins want to replace with another method of giving -rep how about not showing the -rep given to the person except that if the person accumulates a certain number of negative rep the person's username will change colour.
For example:
person X have -50 rep, X's username turns red....

I agree with the 0 minimum rep, any minuses will surely hurt.
Or how about separating them in two both different rep points? :D

I think a Reputation System with Comment-Function would be a good Solution. Also everybody should be able to see who got/lost Rep. Point and who added or reduced them.
The current abuse of the Reputation System bases mainly on the Fact, that you can do it anonymous. If somebody deserves to get or lose Rep. you should tell him so and you shouldn't have a problem with the fact that everybody can see it.

This is essentially what I've wanted to see the rep system be since I joined.
It's easy to tell if someone's griefing your Rep if it shows WHO gave you rep and whether it was positive or negative. Making a reason required to give negative rep will weed out the people who try to be dicks with the system.
I'd like to see a combination of Helmchen's suggestion and the aforementioned idea of negative rep having to be approved byt a flesh 'n blood person before being applied.
Maybe tie in a function where you can see the post that garnered specific rep as well?
Whatever is decided I'll back the Boss 100% :D

If people could see who was de-repping them it would absolutely break the system. People complain about getting negative rep for posting something "people don't agree with" but what do you think happens when that person can readily be identified? It starts rep wars between people. And if it got really bad, between groups. Say I though Jacob was being a douche and gave him a negative rep. If he cared as much about rep as some people he could have my rep (not to mention account) crushed in a second. Even if other site members saw that they might take it upon themselves to antagonize me.
It sounds fine on paper (just like the current system) but it doesn't work at all. The idea of clearing negative rep with mods would work and avoid any serious or petty abuse of rep but it also places an annoying burden on people that have much better things to do.
Just a straight comment system with the repper left anonymous would work as well I suppose. If someone was actually doing something wrong then they would find out what exactly. If someone was doing it for spurious reasons then that would evident from the inevitable "go eat a dick" comment left behind.

I like the idea... but there really should be people who are aloud to give -rep like people who have been deemed worthy by Fakku and Jacob... People who are open minded and can analyze situations accurately.

I say keep the negative reputation. After all, there's no such thing as bad reputation. Just reputation that bad people use.

Sounds like a winner to me . I never had a minus rep until I started rating mangas that I had read . So I stopped . Now I just read them and keep my fingers quiet . Is that what everybody wants from everybody else ???
I guess I had the wrong ides when I read every ones comments - I didn't realize that you could only post if you had every bodys' opinion behind you . Oh well - live and learn .

With my ideal system, I would like to add that the de-reputation comment could be shown on the post that got it or just messaged to the user. But still anonymous, so idiots don't go flaming each other.

You do get negative rep for posting your opinions but that's also how you get positive rep. I've gotten maybe 2 rep for uploads I did back when my account was new. My 13 other points are from people enjoying the things I say. 15 rep isn't amazing but I'm in the upper middle regions of people with rep and I have no "I'm an uploader" or "I work for the site" tag that draws any positive attention to me. Say whatever you want and you'll be liked or hated for it. Pretty much words to live by right there.

i'm really starting to see some of the things previously mentioned here; it's somewhat like high school; cool kids and losers and all. Shame it's like that.

Maybe we just alter the system a little bit. In order for a person to be de-repped a mod would have to agree to it (I.e. when we - rep someone we get a small message sent to them with a short explanation of why this person should lose rep. I can see how this would add to the overall work load of the mods and have to add another feature to the forum code and the site overall but, we can continue to keep people from abusing the system over a disagreement. Yet, keep people from uploading shitty media (maybe a -10 rep prevents uploads and you have to give to the community forums in order to regain the ability to upload again)

My apologies Hibia. I got to the second page of posts and it was all sounding the same. I should have kept reading.
