Well, If we ever had the tech to create colonies in other worlds, we might have a lot of trouble keeping fundamentalists and extremists quiet. As brilliantly showed in the Gundam series and many other novels and books I've read. The imperium of man handled it quite nicely through fear, heresy and xenophobia.

What if they just want to kill you?
@Scar
True, though for initial phase, most criminal and/or fundamentalist elements would stay on Earth. Space travel is expensive, so I doubt any colony would waste it's resources for "troublesome" settlers.
Well, there is a case of colonies rebelling, but that might not be such a bad idea for humanity in general. Not for Earth's governments though.
@Argentine
That's because of God-Emperor and you know it. Plus, the alternative is Chaos.

Mankind has Space Marines. 'Nuff said.
And let's not start about Grey Knights, which are already Elite Space Marines.
And then, there are Adeptus Custodes who guard Emperor, and these guys are even more elite.

Adeptus custodes must have the most boring job ever since the emperor is on the golden throne.
There is always a chance aliens want peace like in mass effect.

Sorta, but in general, think of a "century later" situation
Colony's stable, one person "ala-Hitler" with oratory skills, Political and Economic stability and voila, a rebellion against the Earth Government. Besides, I'm quite doubtful about the creation of a one-world government, since a lot of differences (Political, Racial and Religious) needs a lot of patching-up.

If he's Hitler, the colonies will loose. Hitler was a horrible administrator. Can't argue with his oratory skills though.
I think colonies will have to be independent to some degree anyway, because initially it won't be possible to maintain constant communication or supply lines, unless we develop some incredibly efficient drives.
That might prevent rebellions in short run. But when colonies become developed...well, everyone should remember U.S
I will agree for lack of "one world" government...but I believe something supra-national armed organization will replace the U.N, if only to maintain equilibrium between member nations.
Anyway, supper time, be back.

Hence "Political and Economical stability".
And I forgot, he's supposed to have a mind like Hans Guderian/Adolf Galland (Together with the application of the technology) .
