Even assuming people go all out magical, some ideas will inevitably be based on actual science - if just for appeal, or simply inspiration.
I don't think it's so easy to plainly go "all scientific" or "all magical". Sometimes, middle-ground might just be it. A lot of sci-fi series are pretty much trying to install some science, but it isn't complete - and yet, their still enjoyable.
Regardless, I don't think entropy, or whatever was ever a driving point- it's merely something vague, and ominous-sounding for Kyuubey to pull off.
And no, most science is a dull rehash of something that was done 200 years ago. I understand the need for basics, but for Christ's sake, make it sound interesting.
And teachers are wondering why Mathematicians and Physicists are slowly disappearing.
Perhaps, I should have rephrased that:
The "scientific" science is dull, but science as physics or biology can be interesting.

Which raises the question, what is considered basic science? I agree it's impossible to completely exclude science if you wanna do magic, but come on. Simple things like elements, maybe. Entropy? Lolk, maybe the author took the word right from the dictionary.
So if it's 200 years ago it's dull? Lol, this ain't some trend thing. The beauty lies in the reasoning, and that will be forever valid. If you don't find the reasoning interesting, well, you might not find any logical thinking interesting at all.

If it was interesting, then hat's off to the teachers for making it a compulsory pain. I will honestly admit that I can't point it, but something in basic tenants of most basic sciences - and Physics in particular - just annoys me.
Heh, I use logic only when it is convenient.
That is, I use it, but that's because it's a sad, neccesary fact of life - no matter how I try, 2 + 2 will still equal 4.
Oh, guess what subject of mathematics I did well in? Logic.
I have no idea how it happened.
Or maybe I am logical, but I don't label it as such.

Oh yeah. Sad indeed. As if there's a place for emotional label in logic.
Btw, hat's off indeed. Most teachers are retarded, but if that hinders you from seeing the depth of the knowledge, then I guess it's just not your place to be in.

Which is probably why I willingly decided to pursue a Humanities-intensive courses, both in IB and in University.
But it did annoy me that few teachers encourage their students to creatively approach Sciences. Most of the times it's just "oh, you just need it for the test" and either just gloss over what line of thinking lead to that particular solution, or just ignore it. Or what matter is the procedure with which an experiment is done, and not that somebody has an original idea. (Granted, procedure is important, but c'mon, why is it the main subject of my exam, instead of testing actual knowledge?)
Those views may be a little bit extreme, but sadly, I'm just emotional like that.
