I really tried to love this series.
Its just an awful series that betrayed me. I actually think it was because of this series that I began to detest anime. I haven't been able to enjoy a series after the disappointment of Bakamegaetokri.

Clannad is not a masterpiece. It's another melodramatic, moe-fest from KEY.It's neither accessible, has no universal appeal, lacks action, has no outstanding animation or acting (albeit prodaction values *are* high) and it was not noteworthy in the history of japanimation as it is neither a staple or the herald of any genre.
My vote still goes for Cowboy Bebeop as it has all of the above qualities and is an excellent gateway into anime.
Bakemonogatari is very close to a masterpiece, but IMHO it holds its cards too close to the chest, it's too immersed in the subculture of its milieu to entirely stand on its own.
