I think they did pretty good with Gundam Unicorn. It's not done yet, so I have to wait before passing any judgment, but it's looking promising. And the whole hour long eps aren't hurting....

My all time favourite animes are
Seikon no Qwaser (no it's not because of the breast sucking... well actually at least not all of it)
To Aru Majutsu no Index (captured my attention the first time I noticed In...Misaka. Did you really think I'd say Index?)
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (until they fucked the ending)
Gundam Wing (a classic much better than SEED in my opinion)
Kaze no Stigma (not popular but really amazing story wise.

You haven't seen anything worthwhile then. No, not the overhyped 8th MS team. How about the original Gundam Movies? He? Never watched them because the shitty graphics? Too bad. Those movies packed more emotion and better action into a couple of hours than several other series in their entire run.
