Dialogue

Is there a reason why translators don't "westernize" the dialogue in these things? What I mean is that I've yet to see a hentai translation that reads the way that people in western cultures speak. Call me weird but part of the experience is the dialogue since it puts me in the mindset of the characters and the moment and, when I hear the word "lewd" for the 15 millionth time or hear them say "thanks for the meal," it throws me off a bit. I understand that the translators may not be writers themselves but you at least understand where the writer was going with it so it should be hard to find the western equivalent to "You're big thing is going inside me." Forgive me if this is an old topic, I tried searching for it but found nothing.

Not really getting your question because words such as "lewd" and "thank you for the meal" are English translations for Japanese kanji. Are you by chance talking about the Japanese equivalents of the two words hentai and itadakimasu?
Translator preference, keeping touches of the original culture's language, and how some things translate to are a few of the reasons things don't appear more westernized.
Some people prefer seeing terms and dialogue that reflects the original culture's customs and values. Gives you a look on how things are said from another cultures point of view and after a while you just roll with it. An issue with making works too western is how things become lost in translation. I've seen works that were very westernized and it's really corny. One of the reasons I personally like hentai, anime, etc is because it isn't american. I love to enjoy other cultures works and when I see terms that are specific to another culture, it's interesting. Lastly it's just a translator's preference on how they wish to do things. Can always tell when it's a UK translator (or someone influenced by the UK) because the word "wanker" is used lol.
Not sure if this helps because your question is worded a bit odd to me, if you want more westernized porn go to some place like e-hentai gallery or ex hentai. You can specify your search to "western content" and find western based works.

The question means exactly what it asks, why don't the western translators align the dialogue with a western manner of speaking? The dialogue is off putting and clumsy at times. Instead of saying lewd or "perverted," they could say something like sexy. Instead of saying thanks for the meal, they could say anything, that just sounds weird. This would be no different than watching a foreign movie with english subtitles. The action of the film and everything watching is still indicative to the culture that made it but the translation is made for the audience watching it to ease the understanding of the action.

623 made a solid point.
Kinda silly and makes no sense if you ask me. Lewd and thank you for the meal convey the actions of the characters properly and any other terms for things would be odd. Lewd is pretty common to say in the States and does not equate to sexy; pervert would be the only equate term to replace it, but that's just being picky. Thanks for the meal is like a Christian or Catholic saying grace before supper.
Also a good fact to keep in mind, you know the US is a melting pot of various cultures and customs right? Just because we find other customs and countries odd, the whole western thing is just a generalization of common customs, practices, and social norms as a whole (this can change over time). These works are made in japan to cater to a Japanese fanbase (an English fanbase second).
Not much else I can say on the matter, because a lot of people like how hentai and other works are translated and written, your being a bit picky on such things. I've mentioned it before that there is western porn out there if the more to your liking.

No need to be insulting. I know the works are made in Japan but the translations are for a western fanbase. The Japanese won't have any issue with it because that's how they speak but, when a western translator works on it, it would make sense that they translate for their audience. America is irrelevant to this because American isn't the only english speaking nation in the world. I don't think you're fully grasping what I'm talking about.

I get what your saying and how am I insulting? You asked a question and I'm giving an answer truthfully, doesn't mean I'm right though. The works are translated as accurately as possible for the English speaking audience and when you translate from one country to another you want to uphold the original cultures wording to a degree.
Nothing wrong with lewd and thank you for the meal. What you want doesn't seem possible, because the two words are English and works.

What I mean is that I've yet to see a hentai translation that reads the way that people in western cultures speak. Maybe you should stop saying "westernize" and western culture then. Because, you know, America is the most prominent English speaking country in the western hemisphere and kind of where the term originated. You're clearly asking for a hentai catering to an American audience.

You said it was "silly" when I asked the question in earnest.
You can uphold the original culture, which you can't really avoid due to the action, while aligning the dialogue for a different base since it's constantly done in other media including none hentai manga. Case in point, if I and a woman were about to have sex and she called me perverted or lewd, that would be off-putting since those words have negative connotations in western society even in the context of having sex. Thanks for the meal is just an odd thing to say since no one says it in western society in reference to sex even if you were "eating" a woman out. People don't even say it in reference to thanking someone for a meal. The culture's already preserved by the story being told, the dialogue itself just makes it sound weird.

I think you're projecting on me and that's unfair. As a citizen of The U.S., I don't presume that this nation is the end all/be all of western society which you clearly do by your words. There are other English and non-English for that matter speaking fans in the west who likely struggle with the dialogue in hentai due to different ways of speaking. The words I would use to express a desire to have sex with a woman would probably be different than the words used by a guy in Brazil or someone in Quebec who speaks French because we just wouldn't use certain words.

Honestly dude it is pretty silly from my viewpoint and it's my opinion not some shithole statement to make you cry. If you take offense to it then that is your view. You'll have to grow some thicker skin because if that offends you I'd hate to see how you take what other's have to say on here.
A lot of my friends irl including myself use the word lewd and pervert with their men even during sex. It's just playful teasing and is quite normal in relationships. So to me it's odd that you find those terms odd.
Thank you for the meal in a sexual sense is just a joke and if it turns you off then read something else that doesn't have that term usage. I usually just laugh at it and continue fapping like most people who like the works. Hell I've called my bf's dick a tasty meal before so it's not that uncommon.
I'll probably end posting here with this since you just wanna bitch about things you don't like which I can't help you with. I've also recommended quite a few times already to just read western porn or to watch western 3D porn because that is the only logical solution I can come up with. Could also try and find a girl so you can see how an intimate relationship can be since this shit is pretty common (no offense, I don't know you dude, just giving out suggestions).

I'm not saying that there's one correct way but each nation, culture, etc. words things differently. So, it would stand to reason that translators from different places would naturally word things based on where they're from. They don't have to change the story being told but a direct word for word translation leaves the dialogue out of place and clumsy.

A direct word for word translation is always terrible and I will agree there. Sometimes I'll see translations where characters put their sentences into questions and it is just awkward and that's because the translator was being too literal.
However, some of the things you're complaining about are just nitpicky. Is "Thanks for the meal/food" really detracting from your experience that much? If in the context of blowjobs, yeah, it's a little strange, I'll give you that. But announcing you're going to suck a dick in general is kind of weird. "Time to suck this dick"? "Blowjob time"? It's meh. And the perverted/lewd thing shouldn't be a problem. Oftentimes it's actually appropriate. For example, in some femdom manga, there'll be phimosis guys and they'll say stuff like "This perverted, phimosis dick" or something because they want to make the guy feel bad. It's an especially good word for that kind of stuff.
So yeah, reflect on that because I think I'm done too. Learn to translate and you can make your dreams come true with truly "western" translations.

Reasons why the dialogues aren't westernized is because they want to stay true to the source. They want to get as much culture and keep the original meaning other than 'pleasuring' the audience. Not everyone reads hentai just for the sex, some of us read it cause we enjoy stories which are more mature than your typical manga romance.
If you have a problem with the translations:
1. Learn Japanese yourself and read it in its original language. Translate it yourself to suit your own taste of words.
2. Read another scanlation group's translation, you might or might not be able to find some groups who 'just pleasure' their audience over focusing on the source.
3. Stop reading hentai and go search for western comic porn instead. There is a lot of Marvel, D.C, Disney etc. porn out there which is completely westernized and don't even need translation.
Please keep in mind that Hentai is Japanese and from Japan. Main audience is for Japanese people or usually Japanese interested foreigners. So I don't think there is anything wrong as a translator to choose to aim for the bigger audience which are the people who are just as interested in the Japanese culture as the sex. Usually those who choose to become translators themselves have an interest in Japan since they bother learning the language, also they translate (often) for free and take time out of their life to share a part of Japan's porn culture with the internet. So it should be understandable as a Japan lover to want to bring out most of Japan with the translation and stories of hentai. I know some people just read it to jerk off, but then you kind of have to adapt. We have our own culture as fans and things we appreciate. It is not like we tell America to change to suit the Japanese's taste.
+ I would kind of get upset if everything in hentai just got westernized. It kind of takes away some part of the magic of hentai being hentai.

The point I'm making is that those are odd things to say in certain places and don't get too hung up on those words and phrases because I only used them as examples. No one in western countries says thanks for the meal when performing oral sex so it's a wonder why western translators keep that word for word. It's merely an observation. In addition, just because a word may be accurate during sex doesn't mean it's a word that's used or sound natural if it is used. For example, you would never here a woman say "I want you to have intercourse with me." Telling me to learn to translate is not an answer, it's a deflection. The question isn't about me translating, the question is why don't translators westernize the dialogue especially when it's done in non-hentai manga. Even if I were to learn to translate, the question would be why isn't it standardized?

I'm not getting worked up over words, it's the lack of respect involved especially when I doubt you'd speak to me that way face to face. I pointed out your first insult and your response was to double down and insult me again and now a third time. Again, do you not know how to speak to someone respectfully? the other two who have replied seem to be able to without insults.

They can still stay true to the source while making the dialogue easier to process, it's done in film and non-hentai manga so there really isn't any excuse for it not to be done. As I told 623, telling me to learn to translate is not really an answer but more of a deflection. What you dont understand is that in Japan, they use a lot more speech for things we dont even think about. After a meal when they say "gochisousama" its a sign of respect and thanks. What would be more awkward: Them always saying "Thanks for the meal" or just watching as their mouth moves in silence. Also, how much dialogue do you actually think people have during sex that isn't vulgar?

Sorry, what kind of manga do you read? I don't think I can think of a manga where the dialogue is completely westernized. I have read over 500 mangas which definitely goes over 1000 chapters. The culture, traditions and etiquettes are kept. Just translated to English or left as it is. There is a reason why translators add translator's notice to explain if something isn't common for western people. Also it is not something translators do because they are lazy by "copy pasting" or just "directly translating". It isn't an excuse it is something they chose to do. why should they apologize for the decisions they found most suitable.
About learning the language how do you know they just copy paste? Can you even read the original Japanese text? It could have been something like a Japanese only phrase and the most suitable would be the translation they choose. I know lot of manga where they just put "itadakimasu" instead of just translating it. That is copy paste. By putting "Thanks for the meal" is translating and doing their best to westernize without taking out the meaning. If you feel it is so bad leaving it blank would be even more weird. Also if you don't want to translate become a QC-ER to fix translator's "direct translations". Remember translators are not always native English. They just do their best to find the best suitable translation.
Also just curious. If you don't think "Thanks for the meal" is suitable what would you put there instead. "Gonna suck you hard" ?
PS: if you mean westernized like just putting in "fuck me harder" "fuck me more" instead of the actual Japanese dialogue like some of the clips of hentai anime found on streaming sites then screw you. Hentai is more than just sex.

No one in western countries says thanks for the meal when performing oral sex so it's a wonder why western translators keep that word for word.I doubt many Japanese would actually say it either. These stories are fantasies, and can sometimes use expressions you would not find in a normal situation, maybe for comedic effect, maybe to make things more interesting, maybe even just to have some text in the story at all - after all, how much do people actually talk while having sex? A translation needs to reflect the contents of the source material, not rewrite the story so it sounds more like what you would want it to be, and I say this as someone who actually earns their living as a translator, even if not for Japanese.

It's understandable that their manner of speaking may be different than ours overall but it's still unusual to read if you're from another culture and usually doesn't require a word for word translation. Vulgarity isn't the question, it's awkwardness. You'd expect to hear the words "fuck me" during sex where I'm from but, if a woman called me perverted or even just a perv, I'd think I was doing something wrong. If she said lewd, I'd wonder what she was talking about.

They can still stay true to the source while making the dialogue easier to process, it's done in film and non-hentai manga so there really isn't any excuse for it not to be done. There's no need for that kind of talk, let's keep this respectful.
True, somethings make it through like honorifics(sempai, kun, chan, etc.), I'm talking about phrasing. If you read a non-hentai manga, they tend to flow a lot better than hentai and there isn't any phrasing that stands out as unusual. I don't have this issue reading Naruto, Desert Punk, Attack on Titan, or any other non-hentai manga. That fact that this doesn't happen in those types of stories raises the question of why it isn't corrected in hentai. Copy and paste was just a turn of phrase, I grew tired of saying "word for word." I will say that the translators not always being of native tongue to the language their translating to makes sense, that's for that. It actually brings a bit of clarity to the situations for me.
To be honest, I don't really know what they should say because, if a woman's about to perform oral on me, we're past the point of talking. If she's the type that is inclined to vocalize what she feels about the "work I'm doing," I prefer anything that sounds visceral as if she's in the moment and not really thinking.

There are ways to emphasize fantasy without sounding odd and I'm not asking them to rewrite the story, which would be nigh impossible due to the story already being created. The translator would have to be incredibly creative to change the story when the action is already presented with a change in dialogue. What I'm asking is to make the dialogue flow better for the reader.
