where i work and worked i found that the people who come in and take the time to find a manager have a better chance of getting the job as they can do like a small interview, ie.e they ask what day they can do and if they are looking for full time or part time

The other side of that is walk-ins are usually not very memorable. A lot of the same questions are asked by walk-ins that tend to annoy managers. The manager may also be very busy and taking time off of a task needlessly (in their perspective) to assist a possible candidate for employment. If you call ahead and schedule a time to come in and inquire about positions, you're showing respect to the managers and employees who may be too busy at the time to talk about hiring. It can go either way.

The walk-ins you're referring to know how to interview very well.
