Are Filipinos Asian or Pacific Islanders?

This confusion was started by Filipinos born in Hawaii who ashamed to be called Asian. They have the right to call themselves Pacific Islanders because they were born there, but Philippines the archipelago is not part of the Pacific Islands. That would be like saying Japan and Taiwan is also Pacific Islands because they're in the Pacific ocean.

If you ask a Filipino who lives in the Philippines they will say we are Asian because that's what we were taught in school when we were young.

Philippines was given the name "Pearl of Orient" during the early 1600's by the Spanish missionary Fr. Juan J. Delado and in the late 1800's by our hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
