Fuck RPGs That Demand Requirements For "True Ends"
0
I just got to the end of Record of Agarest War 2 and- [size=10]P.S. Don't buy this game [/h]- I'm just aghast at the fact that, in order to get the true ending I need to fulfill certain requirements. What are they?
Is it to choose certain choices throughout the game? Yes, in a way, but that's fine to an extent.
Is it to max out every character's effection? Partially, yes, but that's very easy to do.
Is it to FUCKING WASTE HOURS OF YOUR LIFE DOING INANE, BORING, NON-STORY DRIVEN SIDE QUESTS FOR NO FUCKING REASON?!!
Why, yes. Yes it is. How'd you know?
Fuck this game. It had a great story and some really good characters, but it can eat a dick if it thinks I'm going back to the beginning of 50+ hrs and wasting so much of my life doing quests like:
-Kill 12 Gargoyles, 2 Dragons, 4 Gorgons
...Why? Why those numbers? Who the fuck thought of those numbers, and why do I have to do this to get the true ending?
Tell me why.
Why?
FUCKING WHY?!
Anyway, aside from "Fuck Agarest 2", I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered such an atrocious "requirement" for a "true ending" before, and what you guys think of things like this.
Should we be able to just get the true end automatically? Should there be no "true end" and just "multiple endings"? Or should it be like P4, where in order to get the true end there is only one "requirement" (those questions)?

True Ends add to the replay value. If you don't wanna play the game again, just watch the ending on Youtube or something.

I suppose some kind of restriction should be given. Type-0's only one was "True End only available after first playthrough", and that's fine with me. Really, if the RPG is worth, I wouldn't mind playing it over and over again.

Besides replay value, it's for the challenge.
If the TRUE End is as easy as flipping your hand, It won't feel like a True End.
You need to work hard for the TRUE end, it's not label as true just because it's another ending. It's THE ending, that can be more canon than any route in any story.

Remember me?
And then there's Mass Effect 3 where the ending blows regardless of if its the good one or not.

Well, it doesn't force you to get the true end if you don't want to.
Also if you're looking for a really challenging true end try Ancient Domains of Mystery.

you make a good point, man, but I somewhat disagree on the hard work stuff. I think that if the writer had an intended "true end", then that should be the first/only ending you get, otherwise why even have multiple endings when you're going to flat out say "this one is the important one"?
Plus, the "hard work" you put in should be fun if that's going to be the case. It can be hard. Very hard, sure. But it needs to be fun and, if it's a requirement, it needs to be plot-related.
Example: One of the other requirements to get the true end in Agarest 2 is to get two NPCs married. This is actually good because that follows through into later on in the game, where the son of those NPCs grows up to be the protagonist's best friend and a major character.
See? Difficult enough to make you work for it, but sensible enough to make you want to work for it.
There's another NPC marriage example to be had in Agarest 2 and that one even involves an epic demon battle to get those two married. That's cool.
"Go collect 12 Whogivesashits" quests should die in a fire, and if they have to exist, then they can't be a friggin' requirement for the True Ending when they have nothing to do with the true ending. You know what I mean?

I always love it when games have multiple endings based on how you play, Makes it more fun.Right, that I agree with. I hear Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is the same way.
Taking that and applying it to Agarest 2, though, just can't be done. Is it really fun when the "how you play" aspect is really just "fulfill this boring arbitrary nonsense with no plot or character value"?
"Oh, you killed that enemy? Good. Now go kill it twelve more times. No, it has nothing to do with the story. Yes, it's mind-breakingly monotonous. Just do it."
That isn't what I'd call "fun". If it was a different circumstance, like say if I had to fight some powerful secret boss enemy, or if it was about certain choices I had to make, or if it was reserved for the New Game+ or something, then sure. But you might as well say:
"Hey, you spent 60+ hrs of your life on our game. To show our appreciation, we'll withhold true denouement by forcing you to write your name a hundred times on a piece of paper every day for a week, then again for the following week, but in different font and sizes."
It's not entirely hard, it's just fucking boring and stupid.

Ive only played the first Agarest war game and it wasnt really all that fun, I stopped playing at around the 3rd generation because it felt so generic.

Lol you think thats hard. Try getting a true ending for one of those bullet hell games. Theirs a theory that theirs one that people haven't even seen because it requires you to not use the 1 thing making the game remotely easier.

Ninety Nine Nights had a sort of true end I can't say for sure what happened cause it's almost impossible to complete the last bit in the game. When you get to the end you face a boss that pretty much is invulnerable to damage and it turns out to beat him you have to go back to earlier parts in the game equip stat reducing gear and try get a really high combo to unlock gear that will help you defeat the last boss.

I suppose you want the true end to be dlc then? I kinda like it when they make you work for something, adds a bit of replay value.

Extended Cut DLC gave them a lot more depth, even if they left half the plotholes open and made everything too rosy. Control is basically the ending to Madoka Magica, which is bullshit.

I only mean that the requirements for the True End should be story-related. If it was one of those (you have to reply to get the true end) then I'm fine with that so long as the normal end isn't shit and I get to keep my equipment. If it was "you have to choose proper choices" then that's fine too. However, arbitrary nonsense is not fun to me. It's literally only "work" for me.
Still, if you think it's fine then I'm not going to try to dissuade you.

In Final Fantasy X-2 you have to get 100% for its true ending but if you look up everything you have to do for 100% you will shit bricks, It sucks but the ending was very cool to watch... on youtube.

If the True end is the First end that you'll automatically get then that just cheapens the quality and I bet most people won't even bother getting other routes.
the hard work = fun, is really subjective though.
Like in Kingdom Hearts, there are 2 ways of getting the "extended end"
1. Playing normal, and then collecting all of the things in the Journal
2. Playing in Proud mode, you just need to complete it
People who likes collecting will obviously like the 1st option, and for them, it's going to be easier
People who likes a challenge will definitely choose the 2nd option, but it's in Proud mode, the hardest setting in KH.
From this 2 you can see that there are different types of "hardwork".
And yes, the collectibles should at least have something to do with the plot or background story.
