It's been... a day, to say the least.
It's been raining really hard here all day, and some pretty wild lightening too.
The first time I called 911 was in my car, and I was going through the town square. I had to go over some train tracks and the arms were going crazy on the street. They were flashing red and would go down to block traffic, and then go back up, and then come back down, up, down, up, down. Eventually people started racing it to try to get across before it went down again - as did I.
After I crossed, I figured it would probably be a good idea to call the police to let them know in case any trains do come by and that thing is on the fritz. So I call, let them know, they thank me and they'll send someone out for it - I go on with my day.
I come home, and I have to go downstairs to my apartment, and the ground floor has a light flickering, I wonder if I should call maintenance, but I shrugged it off, and figured I'd call when the weather wasn't so bad - because it might just be flickering due to lightening, not due to a bad bulb.
Well later that night (nowish) I heard a loud electrical sound outside. I look outside and that bulb upstairs is still flickering, and I hear this really loud electrical sound - but it sounds like it's coming from my air conditioning unit - which by god it was. I rush inside to turn it off, and the thing outside still went on - so I realize it wasn't my unit, but someone elses.
The guy from upstairs comes down too, and we're trying to call the "maintenance emergency" line but nobody is responding, and after about 10 minutes we decide we should call 911 in case it becomes a fire. I mean, the unit outside was black, and sparks were coming from it.
So 2 cop cars roll up afterwords, check it out, let the other guys know it's not an actual fire yet but to come because of sparkage - fucking 5 firemen come up all suited up around this thing, and they cut the wire to stop it. I mean, they looked like they were in bomb squad outfits.
I felt bad because I don't think the firemen had to come to deal with that, if maintenance just came or responded like they were supposed to - it wouldn't have been an issue .____.; but the cop said we were fine, that whenever someone calls from an apartment they bring a lot of people just in case something -does- happen and have to evacuate people.
sigh, my life.

Calling 911 was better than risking the fire though.

At least they're responding well in case of emergency. I would be glad that 5 fireman and 2 cops showed up, at least I know the tax money is going to good use :)

Firemen often get their funding cut first and they end up relying on various means to meet their budget

Glad everything stayed safe. But that's what 911 is for!
Sounds like you dealt with things well, so good job. And let yourself relax a bit tomorrow! :)

Just renting out the house and uniforms to make up for the lacking budget.

Oh, my mom just noted on my facebook that she saw on the news of an area about 5 minutes from me. A man was struck by lightening today who was pushing a baby stroller. (my mom lives about 800 miles from where I live)

At least they respond and actually help you.
Damn emergency response people (those that are government funded and etc.) in my country are useless.
