Accel World is horrible. The idea is great, the world is kinda cool, and the side characters are awesome. But I have never, ever, ever hated a protagonist like I hated the tubby little cry baby. There is really no way to describe how absolutely annoying and pathetic he is. He goes beyond anyone's sympathy and ruined the entire show. That's why we're laughing at him.
It stops being funny very very fast.
Anime would of been decent if not for him. Glad you're getting something out of it though.

The idea and character aside from Haruyuki are all good.
Hes probably meant to man up but never does, They dragged his weak character through the mud and left him there to steep.
The only way i would have liked that anime at all was if

Hard to believe the guy who made Accel World also made SAO.
Honestly I think it's refreshing to see main characters that aren't one man armies that blow everything up. Granted recent anime has been doing this to death so it's going to get old eventually.

Yea I understand where your coming from.
But there's a difference between the functional self doubt that allows you to connect with a character and helps them grow once it's overcome, and the crippling self doubt that doesn't get better and makes you wish he'd just kill himself.
Accel World is the latter of the two.
