I made a thread a while ago about ordering mayo from Japan and reading about it tasting like miracle whip. Well, I was wrong. It tastes far worse than I expected. I took a small finger full just to taste it and I just about vomited. Worst tasting thing I've tasted in a while. Good thing I have some cheeseburger flavoured cheetos to get the taste of it out of my mouth, I'll stick to Hellmann's.I'm starting to wonder now if that is what happened. It definitely wasn't cold when I took it out of the box.
Sounds like it most likely happened, doesn't help that you ordered it from japan, if it came by plane it could have depressurized and made it spoil.

It doesn't need to be refridgerated until it has been opened.
When it comes to mayo, people rarely like any kind of mayo besides the one they grew up using. I love hellman's (or best foods west of the rockies) but my roommate hates it and uses Miracle Whip - which I find disgusting. Thus we have two different mayos in the fridge and can never make potato salad.
Edit:
I doubt it was depressurized either since it probably came over on a boat, and if it came on a plane then the plane is going to be pressurized. Also, why didn't you just go to a local asain market?
