I don't have perfect recall of the incident but honestly nothing that would normally get you banned (from the forums, yeah he was clearly asking for it in IRC) but he's been pushing his luck for a while so from my view it's just that it was the last straw.

I'm not surprised, I've seen him post racial slurs before... I'm surprised he was let by without a ban for that (earlier)

Serious or not a death threat is a death threat. But like you said I myself wouldn't take it serious since no post made by him was ever that anyways.
