I guess some anime use sexuality to water down the violence to make it more likable. It's like eating candy after eating something extremely sour to balance out the taste. The times have changed... during the 90's bloody anime like Guyver, Devilman, and Berzerk were very popular. Now the anime industry is catering to type B otaku, which isn't always bad (^_~).

Maybe so, but that doesn't really answer my question - it gives an answer as to WHY otaku like hentai, but not why it's such a big part of the subculture IMO.
I think it's peculiar that those who allegedly "never get laid" surround themselves with shitloads of pornography (I speak of experience - practically ANYONE who uses my PC is bound to stumble across it eventually)
