on the forums or real life?
couple of ways on the forum... post coherent, well though out posts that challenge users to think. Jokes and the lulz are a good way, but be sure your audience understands your humor, far too often i see people disappointed by the lack of lulz their joke gets because of it's complexity. Uploading images (when you can), doujins, games and videos can obviously help. The most important part of gaining popularity that I can suggest is: don't be an idiot.
In real life, it depends, if you want to become popular among one group of friends or if you're shooting for something larger, like your school. If it's a smaller groups it's fairly easy, pick people you have something in common with, and just be as good/nice a person you can be, try to be funny without overdoing it. Just be who you really are/want to be, people will be naturally drawn to you. As far as popularity among a large group of people, it's slightly hard to maintain and can be hazardous to you and the people around you. I went to a pretty good school where people got along well, even among different cliques so I wasnt a witness to much violence/bullying. When I first got to high school I was already seen as a pretty big and upcoming quarterback (by those who already knew me) so it was expected that I was going to make the team, from there I started by joining all the teams I was good at, football, lacrosse, hockey, soccer (2 years), even debate. That helped get my face/name around, I was nice to people and pretty outgoing, I think I was funny but who knows, maybe people were humoring me. I started getting invited to parties, by team mates, sometimes girls, mostly team mates lol. I just tried to be as outgoing as possible, but I often saw team mates acting like dicks to people they didn't know well, I tried to avoid doing anything negative so I was respected by most of the student body, even those I would not call a friend. During my senior year I broke up a few fights, talked a few down before they escalated, I could feel the school was less friendly than when I first arrived.
Often people say if you want to be popular you should be the person everyone wants you to be... I can't help but disagree, if you're naturally an outgoing person then go for it, be as popular as your personality will take you. If you're more of an introvert though, fuck it, be popular among your friends, don't change who you are, why would you want to be popular at the cost of yourself anyway?

I don't consider myself popular, and I don't care about becoming popular either. 8)

it's a "conundrum" if you can't figure out why, sorta like a paradox but closely related to a riddle.

so why post in this thread? Why? Just answering the OP's question. It doesn't say that you have to be popular to post here - it asks whether you are or not. So those who aren't popular (or just don't consider themselves popular) can obviously give their opinion as well. 8)

Upload stuff. Honestly uploading stuff and helping people get things to work is one of the best ways to get popular. The request section is a big example of that. It really depends on who you wanna get popular with tho. If it's the normal users like elders etc I suggest the lulz. Posting for the lulz is a great way to become popular.
Another question is do you see popularity as rep? If rep to you means how popular you are then uploading stuff is what you need to do. Movies and Games are where the real rep is to be had. Depending on the game/video and the frequency at which you post new stuff you can rack up major rep real quick.

But basically you're posting for the sake of posting, you don't even get credit for the post as IB doesn't add to you post count. Posting because you can is a foolish reason. I don't see any opinion in your post so again, I must ask why post if you have nothing to say?

My opinion was exactly what I posted - that I don't care whether I'm popular or not. I don't post just because I can, in fact I thought quite a bit whether to post here or not, but then decided that an opinion like this should be present here as well.

Popularity = overrated. It died out when I finished High School. I'm content with the friends I have now.
