NO and YES, you could say that it was freakish and repelled people but once again, it doesn't mean its the arm or leg itself.

So, BEFORE he had his arm and leg cut off, he had no friends, and now he's happy they're off. This means that they were the cause of him having no friends. Therefore the only conlcusion I can come up with was that they looked weird and made people avoid him.

You're pretty much right down on the answer till the looking weird part on the right arm and left leg, you just have to think of how it nwas weird.

Did he consider santa doing this favor for him an act of friendship?

Janos, his leg being weird... it makes me think of this picture that I saw on some forum and I dont think any normal person would even approach you if you had that...

YES, HA! There we go, a simple reason to why people avoided him and had no friends. Yes the boy had extra limbs which made people around him avoid him so he asked Santa to cut them off so he can be normal.
