It's fun. The problem is that to fully understand all events in Alternative, you'd have to play Extra/Unlimited. Extra is pretty average, though I get the feeling you'd like Unlimited, since it has complete civilian getting through a military course on Earth that is loosing a war for survival.

Alternative is also slow to pick up action, but turns out mindbogglingly awesome. It also has Americans doing what Americans do best. F-22s in Japan.

Hmm, I guess if I want to play Alt. I might as well play the rest of the series, ey?

I'm pretty exited about the F-35 Lightning IIs, although since its new there wouldn't be a mech of it in Alt.
