Otaku in japan are people who overly-obsesses over stuff like anime and video games, they are widely ridiculed by most of the populace.Baack, waaaay back I was still a newfag in the world of japanese culture (as I have just stumbled upon the beauty of non-mainstream animes). I was using the japanese language along with english that sounded so broken and fan-girlish, I watched a lot of animes and tried to imagine I was like a main character in my own anime, I considered myself cool as I sung anime OPs word per word in romaji. Then I grew up, my username today is a fragment of that dark time, trust me those want to be an otaku don't know what it really means to be one, it's used as an insult and a derogatory word like "nerd" or "geek". I hate those people who just want to show off, it reminds me of my dark past, my dark faggoty past.
Say whatever, man. I envy the nerds.
Imagine getting that excited over something as trivial as a new record, an engine rebuild, or the new season of (Insert anime here).
They must view the world through rose coloured glasses, man. I wish.

Don't be a self proclaimed nerd/otaku, call yourself an enthusiast.
Professionals have standards.
