Greetings, people. Today I would like to present you yet another writing about the wonder of Gensokyo.
Today's topic will be about Gensokyo's bestiary - It's: Hakutaku.

The hakutaku (白澤 or 白沢) is a mythical, spiritual beast, which is said to advise only kings of virtue. It is generally depicted as looking somewhat like a massive lion and can be distinguished by the presence of single or double horns. Often it will have extra eyes on its face or back. It is usually considered to be quite intelligent and well-read.

In Japanese folklore, it is said that a hakutaku visited Emperor Koutei (koutei is the Japanese word for emperor, so this is a fictional account). The creature could talk and explained that he only visited the greatest and most auspicious of rulers. The hakutaku went on to explain to the emperor that there were 11,520 youkai in the world; it also taught the emperor how to escape and exorcise the bad ones and deal with the good ones. The emperor set all that knowledge down in an encyclopedia of youkai.

Personalities : Very wise, Mature, Strict, yet she is actually caring. In Hakutaku form, she is being more aggressive than usual.

Abilities : In human form, can consume (hide) history. In hakutaku form, can create and change history.

Occupation : Schoolteacher; acts as guardian of the human village

First Appearance : Imperishable Night ( Touhou 8.0 )

During Imperishable Night, Keine, being sensitive to the moon herself, sensed the strange events that were occurring. As a safeguard, she hid the village's history, making it as if there had never been a village there to begin with, so that the inhabitants would be protected from any youkai. After being defeated, Keine pointed the heroines toward the ones responsible for the fake moon in the sky. Later, during the Extra Stage, Keine acted as guardian of Fujiwara no Mokou and attempts to stop the player from reaching and facing Mokou.

Keine seems to have a strong desire to protect humans and would probably be the safest person in Gensokyo for any human to be around.

- Abundant in knowledge, the wisest of the half-beasts is Keine Kamishirasawa.

- Upon seeing the full moon, she will transform into a Hakutaku

- A hakutaku is a youkai which appears to virtuous rulers at the beginning of their reign, warning them of future calamities and guiding them on the proper way.

- She can erase history when human, and when she becomes a hakutaku, she can create history as well.

- The history of Gensokyo is that which is created by her.

- Speaking of history, things do not become history merely by happening. Things do not become history unless they are made history by someone's hands. She can fabricate history that didn't happen, or conversely, erase from history incidents which actually did happen.

- History is reality, seen from a single point of view.

- This power of the hakutaku is also used for the circumstances of virtuous rulers.

- She lives in a human village, where she runs a school and compiles history there every day. Such is her profession.

# The kanji characters for Keine translate loosely to "Wise sound" while Kamishirasawa literally means "Upper stream of a white valley." However, the Kamishirasawa kanji can be read as "ue hakutaku" or "uwa-hakutaku" and so likely a pun by ZUN when he named the "Were-Hakutaku" character.

# "Keine" is also a declensional form of the German word of negative article or negative determiner as "no" in "No one shall sleep tonight". Although the two words are pronounced differently, Keine's name used in this manner may also be a reference to her ability to negate history.

# Most of her spell cards are based on the history of the Emperor of Japan.

# Some members of the Touhou community have jested that Keine's hat resembles a bento box or a house.

# Keine is the owner, and history teacher of the Human Village's school.

# Since she has the ability to change history, some fans make jokes about her having relationships with characters that never came out in any of the games, such as Rin Satsuki.
