It would be nice, but the possibility is highly unlikely. The stories and the characters aren't that organized nor as lively as you can see within the current installments. No matter how interesting they are in the fanworks, we shall keep in mind that not all the interesting things have basis to explain motive-behind-action.

ZUN is like saying that we should get over PC-98 era.

So far, there are only 2 characters who traveled through the eras, Yuuka and Alice, and we all know how much ZUN likes those two. Maybe you can also include the sealed monk since she manages to execute Devil-Recitation-like spell, but it's more like a tease. After replaying UFO several times, not even once I found either Marisa or Reimu mentioned something about their previous trip to Makai, or even Shinki.

Aside from what stated above, I believe there is no other significant strings that may connect between eras. Reimu and Marisa in PC-98 are heavily implied to be not the same persons as they are in Windows era. Reimu doesn't remember Alice; Reimu doesn't remember her interference in Mugenkan against Yuuka, which the latter still remember (albeit the validity about that '60 years ago' is questionable, since yeah .. it's Yuuka). Where is Ruukoto ? Where is Mimi-chan ? Where is Mima ?

If fans create some games dedicated to PC-98 characters, then it's again .. questionable. Do you want someone to like Yumeko because she has proven to be superior than Sakuya because she wears no pads ? Or maybe do you want to see someone to like Konngara because she is one of the Devas of Mountains ? It's okay if you enjoy quality fanworks, as I myself enjoy it too, but we have to keep both distinct for obvious reasons.

For me, I'd prefer them to rest rather than seeing my favorite PC-98 characters, such as Chiyuri, Yumeko, and Shinki to be falsely worshiped by self-proclaimed Touhou fans.

Though, I have to admit that deep inside I want more PC-98 characters to make a future appearance in later games, but beggars cannot be choosers. I would be very happy if ZUN wants to, but if he doesn't want it, then so be it. On the brighter side, the religion circle has been completed, with MoF, UFO, and TD released. (Shinto, Buddha, and Tao, respectively) We can safely expect a fresh new arc in the new installment, let's just wait for that, the possibility is limitless. [/align]
