Filthy Smut Peddler Reporting For Duty

I'm the owner and manager of Ultimate Anime, a doujinshi store located in the US. If any of you have gone to any conventions in the north east in the past 5 years you've probably seen me with my big black shelves full of boxes of dirty books.
After being in business for 7 years now I've learned quite a bit regarding the laws and rules governing the adult entertainment industry both here and in japan so I hope to shed light on any questions people have about how things work and why.

I was a disillusioned comp sci major who realized he wasn't going to make more than 35k a year out of college, about half what I was lead to believe I would be making when I started. I decided to drop out and start my own business instead of spending the next 6 years building up massive amounts of debt with student loans. I spent an afternoon brainstorming and browsing Ebay for retail ideas and found a handful of people from Japan selling doujin which struck me as a great niche market in anime. I then found a doujin store that had a decently high google pagerank but was obviously in neglect(bdr517.com) and offered to take the site off the hands of the owner in exchange for me buying all his inventory outright.

How did you get into the business of selling doujins?

Well I'm not going to kid you, it's scary as hell being your own boss. If anything goes wrong the only person I have to blame is myself. At the same time I've watched almost half my friends lose their jobs in the current economic troubles, which is something I don't have to worry about. I've also got to enjoy the past 7 years selling hentai for a living and getting the chance to meet and hang out with some of the biggest names in the anime industry. Going into business for yourself is a great risk, but at the same time it can bring some pretty great rewards.

Where in the North East? I'm from that area. It's really interesting to have you speak about being a sole proprietor. I'm in college right now for an undergraduate in business management, so afterwards I can get my doctorate in chiropractic and have my own clinic.
