It's a relatively new concept. i'd say from about the mid to late nineties. the few times i've gone back and watched the cartoons i used to watch when i was a kid(in the eighties), it's not there.
i think it started with the movies. a sort of subliminal hook. to get the adults who take the kids to see crap like shrek, they slip in a few jokes that are funny to adults. then the next time the kids are screaming to go to that drivel, the adults recall the parts they liked and think, "it wasn't so bad".
Holy shit...never thought of it that way til now. :|
What did you think it meant?
Honestly, I had no idea. I actually don't even remember that line, now that I think about it, even though I've seen the episode a bunch of times (although quite long ago).
well I don't remember that episode of power puff girls. And I have watched some of the cartoons I used to watch. I got to say that I am sorry for the kids these days their cartoons suck ass. They need some Looney Tunes.
I watched a small bit of Pinky and the Brain when I was growing up, as most american kids growing up in the 90's did. Back then I didn't really get it, but my tiny kid brain was all 'omg talking evil mouse, talking stupid mouse... LOLOLO!'.
My boyfriend recently had me watch it with him, and I suddenly realize how age-inappropriate the humor was. It wasn't necessarily dirty or dark, mostly just ... political, oddly enough. Lots of satire and pop culture references about the preceding decade. It was kind of awkward...
RED HEAD!!!!!11! WOOOOHHHHHH!!!11!!!1 THATS WHY I FUCKN LOVE RED HEADS !! (now to the topic)
