Media player: VLC (Sorry if this is not to be posted)
BT client: Bittorrent, Vuze
Internet browser: Firefox, Chrome (Cause IE sucks)
EDIT 1: Added Vuze/Azureus.
Frankly I'm tired of this bashing:
IE 8 & 9 is are more than acceptable.
The only problem is computer illiterates using the old versions (5 & 6) even though Windows Update makes you use at least IE 8 nowadays, but ppl just won't upgrade (or properly apply Windows Updates)!
The segment that keeps using these outdated browsers is also the least savvy when it comes to browsing, so they click each and every ad they come across and therefore are most prone to installing virii and spyware.
They are acceptable, but not good enough in terms of speed.
Excuse me, but the whole "which browser is fastest" dick-beating contest is pure, unadulterated bullshit. Is a 10-20 ms delay something that should form the basis of your choice of browser? For anyone sane, that's so fare down the list of priorities that it's not even funny.
Security, ergonomics, (HTTP 5.0/CSS) compliance, resource usage (memory footprint, CPU usage), user familiarity... these are important features of a browser. The mere fact that IE 9 is still IE - in its aesthetics, UI and so on - is a very important feature for a set of basic users who are not adept at learning a new UI.
Ever since I've been working as a sysop, I've become ever more aware that good IT experts give users advice that promotes sane behavior and lets users pick the right tools for their needs. Sometimes that means promoting IE 9, as your 50 something boss won't learn either Chrome or Firefox since he's been using IE all his working life... no, he's not stupid! He's there to make money and since he's your boss, he probably knows something about that. No one's giving a flying fuck about how backwards he's as far as IT is concerned... your job is to make him adjusting to IT easier, not being a smart-ass hipster who shows of his l33t skills.
