Ammy's Art Thread 10/22/14

I use Paint Tool SAI. Crisp lines and clean coloring is about all I can kind of do right. I try to draw the lines with long strokes so that it doesn't look too sketchy. This takes a long time to do though. I usually end up drawing the same stroke multiple times until I get it right (or at least somewhat acceptable).

Here's basically what I try to do. Skip to about 3:40

Guess I should get one of them tablets. Wonder if they got 'em with screens- I prefer being able to look at what I'm doing.

They do have tablets with screens but they're a lot more expensive. I have one of the cheapest ones you can get. It does take some time to get familiar with using one though.

Everyone thinks that at first but really, it's magical how fast you'll get used to it. First you try using the tablet like a mouse/mousepad for a while but in a week or two it actually get's really comfortable. And not having your hand in the way, blocking the vision of the picture is a huge plus for me. I recommend ;) (Also compared to traditional drawing: you'll never have to worry about pencil/ink stains all over your paper and your hand(s) again. PLUS d-d-d-d-da undo button! And layers.)

Edit: Ammy, I share your obsession over getting strokes right. I am ashamed of the amount of times I have sometimes redrawn a stroke of hair or the outline of a thigh etc...

I just realized I might be the only one here who actually use the curve tool for line art... So that's why it feels unnatural sometimes.

Ooh. I've been wondering many times if I should learn to use that. Though there's 1000 other things I'm trying to learn so bleh =D Do you sketch with a pencil/tablet first and use the curve tool on top of it or how?

Yes, I make a rough sketch on tablet first and then curve tool afterwards. It's really useful for any curve or sphere-shaped object. There's still some limitations like it doesn't look natural as I said.

I'm also thinking of trying out you guys' method. It might look better, who knows :)

I took two screenshots of Atsuko from Minami-ke Tadaima and merged them together like this


Then I did a vector trace for the fun of it. I also tried removing her clothing in the process.


Again, this is a trace. I can't really take credit for anything. I just like doing this sometimes as sort of a "study".

That's a pretty close Kotoura. Job well done.

I went back and made some very minor changes so below are the final versions. I removed a small line and slightly altered part of the shading on her thigh.
