Also, a victim might be on the ground dying without anyone helping because, with such busy lives, people don't want the hassle of getting involved and having their lives complicated by dealing with the police or having to testify in court, Geller say. And people are afraid of getting hurt.
"We're more suspicious now than ever before," Geller said. "We are very leery. This guy could be wanting you to come over, and he could jump up and steal something."

That's pretty much the heart of the issue, I believe.
People yack and jabber about how it's everyone's duty to help, but their environment as is is working against helpfulness.
If the possible reward for helping an allegedly wounded guy is hassle at best or getting mugged at worst, nobody will help. Big surprise. That's cities for you.
That kinda just reminded me of the first episode of Gantz...

Curious and Wondering

Good ol' Bystander effect strikes again! Man, I love psychological cases like this one. I also wrote an essay on Kitty Genovese a few weeks ago. Weird.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect
Yep. Bystander effect it is.
I still remember back in college in Psychology class where we spent a week intensely discussing and debating about this one.
But it still bothered me that there was that guy who went to the dying guy on the sidewalk, checked him out, lifted him by the shoulder, and then walked away... what the? One even took a camera shot at the poor guy. I don't think those qualifies anymore in the bystander effect boundaries. Or maybe we're seeing a more evolved, modern form of bystander effect that should have a few psychologists updating their books about it.

I'm surprised nobody tried to rob him.I don't think he had much on him to steal since he was homeless.

That's really messed up a lot. I heard about the guy getting hit and watched the video. It was just sad all those people not one person got out there cellphone and phoned in. And now this one with the guy getting stabbed, The dude taking the picture on his cellphone and walking off is a sicko. But now That I heard about this "Bystander Effect" it just sicking that people only think about themselves thinking someone else will call out instead of them. I also think that Bystander Effect happen here in Tx, Couple days a go a women was killed by her husband with a chainsaw in front of her own house. The neighbor said police never been in that part of the neighborhood till that day. So I was thinking no one heard her screaming or wondering why a chainsaw as going off in the middle of the night? Someone had to at least hear it.

I saw that on the news, and watching that footage made me sick. It was to the point where someone walked up to him to snap a picture of his dying agony. Another tragedy to chalk up on my personal board.

"I'm a boob man"
Shit like pisses me off. Now you know why people are more reluctant to help others.

Sometimes, people feel they have a reason to fear helping; whether it's legitimate or not can put you at risk for misunderstanding. Then again, those morons should at least call 911. Alas, humanity is not as wise as we take it for.
Are you suggesting the country life is any better? With any neighbor 50 miles away from you where they can't hear you scream "rape"?

I actually got upset about this and ranted to my mother. I'm a lifeguard, and it's my job to help people. I am so sickened by this shit. Twenty-five buckets of dicks. They aren't people. What the fuck was going through their heads? Even if there is a "Bystander Effect", every on of the people who walked my the camera were alone. There was one person at a time, so the "Effect" is null and void. Also meaning that everyone of those people should experience the same thing: people walking by while they are dying with no one helping them.
What the fuck is wrong with humanity?
I hope Karma comes back and bites them in the ass shoots them in the head.

Yeah but they'd come rushing with shotguns if they do hear you scream.
