It's hard to explain it basically you order one thing and then you choose your own sides instead of just getting whatever the menu says.
To designate an option to choose, at no extra charge, a side dish to accompany a main course item.

I have two definitions for a la carte, both of which work.
1) Referring to a menu on which each individual item is listed with a separate price, or.....
2) Referring to cooking to order, as opposed to cooking ahead in large batches.

I'm jelly, maybe I should start taking cooking classes. I have nothing other than education planned atm anyway. Would be nice to cook for my guests and women.
