Alcohol Laws. (underage drinking)
0
Hey,
About 4 months ago, my father passed away. He left a bottle of Jim Beam behind, and I've slowly been drinking it away each month on the anniversaries of his death. It's been almost 5 months now, and the first of January is his birthday, and I'm going to be drinking a little more heavily of that day. Now, I'm 18, and i know, it's illegal in the states, but it's for a special reason that I believe justifies the drinking.
Onto alcohol laws. I believe that the legal drinking age in the United States should be 19. Why 19 instead of 18? So the stupid fuckin' kids in school who would drink heavily when they turned 18 wouldn't show up in school hungover, let them get out of school first, then they can drink themselves to death.
Soooooo, Thoughts, anyone?

Kids are going to drink regardless of the law.
So what does it matter?
Youre keeping it from being bought from more irresponsible people than there already are.

Let the people drink, I'd say. It would be easier to regulate underage drinking if it weren't outlawed, something governments are probably aware of but do nothing about because it wouldn't be "politically correct" to say that they'd rather have their teenager buy booze at a store rather than from some shady guy's trunk at trice the price.

I started drinking before I became legal enough to drink. So it's fine. As the people above said, don't get caught drinking and don't drink more than you can handle.

Alcohol laws, I find, are closely related to the culture of the place. Look in Europe, some places you can start drinking when your 14, and the general consensus is that its ok. Or here in Canada, age varies from 18-19. Here in BC most people who turn 18, will go visit Alberta cause the age is a year lower their at 18. Here we are lax, most parents will let their kids try some booze.
The States, I dunno, never have been good with alcohol. You guys had prohibition, and look how that turned out. The legel drinking age laws probably could be lower, people are more responsible. (always will be idiots)

The legal drinking age in the place I was when I was a teenager was 16. 21 just seems absurdly high, but 16 does seem a little low.
My belief is that its better to drink at home and to demystify alcohol with allowing teenagers to have a half-pint of beer or a glass of wine with their meals every now and again. Depends on the family though
also sorry to hear of the OP's father. R.I.P. and all that

RIP Fakkuist's dad.
Well, legal drinking age don't really matter in my honest opinion. There are many, many cases of underage drinking and the punishment is never really severe anyway (at least here in Australia). But 18-19 years old seems acceptable to me.
The first time I touched alcohol was when I was 14. It was a bottle of beer.
I don't wanna go through shit like medical expert's opinion and stuff like that, people still drink when they are underage regardless of their opinion anyway.

Drinking age limit here is already 18. They pretty much drink heavily from 15 anyway, the little shits. so, they seem to get 'sensible' before their 18th. Besides, most people save the drinking to friday/ saturday night. If they are hungover in class, just make really REALLY loud noises near them, and they'll regret it, haha.

Whatever the regulation, nothing will change.
I mean damn, I've got some kids that I babysit who are 11 years old that are stealing beer from their parent's fridge and telling me not to tell (which I did, as if I'd let my twelve year old sister drink beer).
The problem isn't the regulation its the eductaion that society gives. If kids hear that its cool to drink, then they're gonna do it, no matter what, because the message is being sentby the "popular kids", as in TV, gangsta rap, or any other source (you name it, I'm not pointing fingers, just aiming at the general media and society).

I don't think the age limit will keep minors from drinking, but 21 is a little high in my opinion, it just seems strange that you can strip and appear in porn before you can imbibe alchohol. I think these ages should be reversed - legal to view porn at 16, appear in porn at 21 [So people can have at least three years of college or self-exploration before deciding to do porn. I feel like too many rich, spoiled undisciplined girls see it as a way to make easy money without really understanding what it does to you], and drink alcohol at 19.

Because laws have ever stopped minors from drinking alcomohol (and having sex) in the past.
It's as Nike say - Just do it. It's up to you to make your own mistakes in life, it's how we learn.

Laws don't stop under aged people drinking at home. Since the laws are just about 'selling' mostly.

For me .. I would say this ...
Let drinking happen at 18 ... it's the age of adult and it probably be better since it calms the citizens, but only on strong alcoholic drinks.
For the more innocent drinkers, like beer and such with very small percentage of alcohol, I would say 16+ ... beer isn't that bad.
For anyone 15 and under, I am sorry, still need to drink apple juice.
Why I write these down?
Well ... because I grew up with these issues, not from me, but from others, and I know what to do to calm down their rage.
Besides, if parents allow it, wouldn't it make their children that much more obedient and thankful of their parents?
HOWEVER ... that still wouldn't stop minors from drinking ... I am not a fan of drinking alcohol so I can't understand drinkers like my buddies.

What?
Edit: Do you really think a substance, which is a factor in riots, fights, abuse, rape, deaths/accident calms the citizens? Alcohol is one of the most abused substances in the world.

Sorry 'bout your dad. Hope he rests well.
I read somewhere that alcohol can have a detrimental effect on the developing brain during adolescence, so that's one reason why. I personally don't care since I don't drink. It all tastes like shit to me.

I started drinking at 18, and i live in the states, its not really a big deal, just dont do anything stupid that gets you caught. Drink in safe environments.

I started drink at the age 13 or 14 when I went back to China for vacation as they don't have any law on alcohol. As long as you drink responsibly and not throw an alcohol party, it should be fine.
