Certain animes should never be adapted to Live-Action. ex. DBZ. lulz.
For Evangelion, the makers are taking a big risk, to adapt a well-known name in anime into live-action. I can only pray that it is worth it.

tell me about it. DBE was an epic fail. but i have to say i am frigin exited about a live action NGE. my main worry is that they know there takeing a risk therefore they might not do what it takes to make it to its full potential. example being they dont give it a proper buget so if it does fail they dont lose as much. but if they dont give it a proper one its more likley TO fail. you know what i mean?

The old, "production hell", character sketches and planning for the supposed EVA film looked horrid.
The pilots ages seem to have been moved, as they look like little Megan Fox clones... if the film ever gets made, say goodbye to classic looks of Asuka and Rei: they both got makeovers. -3-
As did EVA.
However, I know Cameron is planning to adapt Battle Angel Alita, so that would at least mean high budget and hopefully careful work. And diCaprio still wants to re-make Akira, I think...

I know what you mean.Im exited as well, but In this case, its safe to assume,
that the risks outweight the benefits
so to speak. My main concern is, are they going to pull out all the cards, to make this one Hell-of-a-good movie, or are they gonna make into what the Average Americans will like? Im a big fan of EVA , so Im skeptical. So far, DBZ and the Legend of Chun Li, were not so great adaptations.

DBZ, while popular, was not a very good choice to try and adapt to live action.
Especially with American audiences.

Part of what made Dragonball is the comedy. But that type of comedy in an American audience was only appreciated by anime fans.
So they in turn focused on the action.
But the type of action it would require to stay in canon would be difficult to do.
So it was doomed to nerfing the moment it was targeted at American audiences.

you would think the big think-tanks at the top would think about that before it happend. this is why the should put an honest to god anime fan in charge of production for thease.

I think they would benefit if they open a discussion forum for anime fans to discuss with the producers and director what would be a good way to adapt the animes.
Like the director could suggest adapting it this way for these reasons.
While the anime fans could decontruct, explain what is and isn't a good idea and for what reason as well as suggesting improvements.

NO - there isn't. Movies are big-dollar affairs, incurring huge costs and I can tell you most will not care whether they "stay true to canon", otaku are not their intended audience! These movies are intended for the mass audience and will rarely stay true to the original work - if you think about any movie that is based on another work, novels, etc - it is rare for them to follow closely the original work.
Sometimes this is due to time constraints, but more often than not its because they are adapting a work which had limited, cult appeal and are now trying to make it appeal to a larger audience. No one spends hundreds of millions to make a movie for a small and limited audience.

Actually, one example of a relatively esoteric piece of work which was successfully adapted and marketed that I can think of is Fight Club. I don't recall the book being overtly popular in the mainstream, and while the film did have its differences with the novel I'd say that it stayed true to its source material and proved to be an engaging, thought provoking movie. However, the film was advertised by the actors and marketed as some sort of gritty, testosterone fueled action-comedy and thus attracted an audience whose heads the movie's themes, motifs, and messages went soaring over. I've often heard people at school simply quoting lines from the film because they thought it was funny, never considering Fight Club's social critique on consumerism or the sociological effects of fascism.
If someone were to indeed make a live action animé, it would not at all be unrealistic for them to be true to the original; they just better have a damn good marketing team.

I feel the biggest deal regarding this is that anything that attempts to be live action in relation to anime/manga created in the U.S. is simply never going to follow canon. It is as you have said, that obviously the movies are constructed to a mass audience, but I think in addition to following the standard movie 'canon' style, many of the implementations of anime appeal (fan-service, character design, etc.) simply will not be transferred over.
For instance, if there ever is a live Evangelion movie created by a U.S. production studio, I can guarantee you that Rei will not have blue hair and have her anemic signature looks. One, it's obviously not going to go well with audiences, simply because the masses will think it's silly that she has blue hair. Two, the studio is going to try and throw in innuendos between Shinji and Rei that simply wouldn't have existed in the series, making it seem like they're in love with each other in a manner that the original series did not put on. I feel that if it's created, whomever writes the screenplay for it will do exactly as I've outlined. It's simply going to align itself with what mass audiences will expect.
I have been generally very please with most all anime live action that is actually created by an Asian production company. Death Note was pretty nice. Lovely Complex was humorous, albeit in a large amount due to over exaggeration. I'm a big Initial D fan, and was fairly pleased with the movie, especially with the usage of very little computer animation help and actual drifting. The multitudes of live action series are rather humorous as well. I watched a good chunk of Sailor Moon live action with my fiancee' and she thought it was so humorous that it was ridiculous (in a funny enjoyable way).

The thing about not sticking to canon isn't just because we as anime fans want them to.
It's a stupid thing to do. Canon is basically the story itself. The plot and everything. Not sticking to canon means you're tearing up the story.
When has Hollywood EVER made a decent movie pulling this sort of crap?
The reason they should ask anime fans for help, is that we are the bridge between them and regular fans. We know what would work for us, and what could be done to tweak to work for regular fans as well.
Blue hair won't throw people as off as you think. Especially for something in an apocalyptic setting.
