Asian and want to grow a beard
0
I'm Asian, more specifically Korean, 19 years of age. Always wanted to grow a beard but sadly i'm quite hairless and looking at my dad and his side of the family, they don't have a beard. My mom's brothers all are quite hairy though. Nevertheless, screw my genetics.
With little research i found that there are multiple ways to work around this.
1) Surgery = Hell no
2) Wait till mid-twenties = I'm not patient enough and i'm pretty sure my puberty has run its course
3) Lift weights to produce more testosterone = Used to gym but can't be stuffed
4) Testosterone therapy = Just no. Bet it would be really expensive long term
5) Apply rogaine to face = Hair loss treatment
After browsing through jefffsbeardboard, i'm seriously considering trying rogaine. There are a few side effects and possible risks; which i'm willing to discontinue use if i do suffer serious health problems from it. I may update photos and the progress by weeks.
So Fakku community, what are your opinions on this?

I'm actually jelous of you.
By the time I turned, say 15-16 I had to shave two or three times a week to keep a smoth face.
Now, past 24, I would have to do that every other day, but I decided to just screw it.
When it gets in the way, I mow it down with an eletric shaver.
Trust me, it's not fun.

Sadly i won't know till i experience it. And my friend shared this on his Facebook wall.

Hyperboles aside, this makes me even more insecure. To the point i tried photoshoping a beard onto my profile picture. Biggest photoshop skills one will ever see.

My beard grows pretty quickly. Two days after shaving I get stubble and by 2 weeks it's back to being bushy. According to my friends and girlfriend I look 12 years old without a beard, which might be why I get ID'd at the pub when beardless. The only downside to a beard is I can't suction glasses or mugs to my face.
Anyway, keeping on topic: My friend Barry's in the same position as you. He's slightly younger than me but can't grow a full beard, can only grow arsefluff.
You can try rogaine if you're too lazy/poor to try the others. I mean, what have you got to lose, right?

If you shave early, then your hair will start growing faster as a result.
You know how if you cut your hair often it grows back faster? Same goes with facial hair.
I had to shave back in high school because my JROTC didn't allow even a little bit of hair so I have to shave every day now.
I'm Korean and 19 too so no excuses.
Also because I started shaving early, I have more hair on my chin and upper lip than my brother who is 6 years older than me.

If you shave early, then your hair will start growing faster as a result. This old gemstone. According to this, this, this, this, this and this, what you said is a commonly-believed myth that just won't fuck off.
In short; hair continuously grows and the follicles which produce hair under the skin and are unaffected by shaving. The only thing shaving does is cut the hair off. We notice the short hair growing more than if the hair had been grown out.
As for puberty arse-fuzz, it's always thin when it first starts to grow and gets thicker as you mature into an adult. I didn't shave until a year after my beard first started growing and I now grow a full beard within 2 weeks, sideburns and all.
You just got lucky with your genes if your beard grew out more than your brother's.

I've also read similar conclusions in journal articles. According to Robert Shmerling (2007):
How Hair Grows
First, let's talk about hair growth. The real action happens below the skin's surface, in the hair follicles. A hair follicle is a specialized gland just beneath the skin where a shaft of hair is produced. The color, length and consistency of a hair are determined in the hair follicle. The number of hair follicles determines the number of hairs over a given patch of skin, which is a key determinant of hair thickness.
There's nothing you can do by cutting a hair shaft at the surface of the skin that will alter how quickly it grows back. You also can't alter its color or texture. And certainly shaving doesn't increase the number of hair follicles, which is the only way to increase hair thickness. That's true whether the hair is located on the face or the legs. The only thing shaving does is shorten hair.
So my friends were wrong: Shaving doesn't make hair grow back faster, thicker or darker. They were simply repeating what they'd heard from friends or family who had equally unreliable sources.
Origins of a Myth
It's easy to assume that when one event follows another, the first one caused the second one. But that may be faulty reasoning. People start to shave when hair becomes noticeable in places they'd rather not have hair. We shave because hair is growing darker, thicker or faster. Shaving does not make that happen.
This myth may also follow from the practice of pruning plants and trees, which is intended to stimulate the growth of new branches. Hair, however, grows strand by strand, from a single hair follicle, without branching.
Another reason for this myth is that stubble -- shaved hair that is just starting to grow back -- is sharper and more noticeable, and may feel thicker, than hair that's grown out for a while.

Nevertheless, i do shave once in a couple of weeks.

You have no idea how jealous I am. I hate shaving. It's such a waste of time and I hate spending money on razors.

You should consider yourself lucky. All having a beard does is making your face itchy while it's growing. Then if it grows too much you have to give it form so that you can actually look good in it. And shaving will only speed the aging process on your face if done carelessly and with cheap products, so it adds an unnecessary worry.

Try taking lots of vitamin B, and also facial massages are supposed to stimulate your hair follicles. I've been trying it and while you're not gonna see incredible results, they are noticeable.

I can only get chin strap/ douchey beards... which suit me more than a full on beard, so I'm not complaining. But yeah, Good luck to you on your quest.
I was in the same position, and I still sort of am. My facial hair isn't the thickest, but I've been persisting. It's now getting to be thicker. I'm 21 though :/
A few guys I went to school with are having trouble, still. Had one come through work ages ago and mention mine 'Ah man, you guys all have such awesome facial hair, and I can't grow anything'
Man, I don't even have chest hair... which I like, but I do get shoulder hair, which shits me up the wall some.
Try all the old wives tale kinda things to get it to grow, such as massaging it, use the hair growth stuff, etc
