It is kind of irrelevant. It is one thing to fight for LGBT activism in order to be treated equally, but to act as though there is some grand, in depth history that needs to be taught in schools is ludicrous. I mean it is good to teach kids about what the LGBT movement is and what strides it has made in the last few decades, but it feels like they are trying to grandstand this a bit. As though LGBT is so entirely important to human history that it has to be recorded in the annuls of time as to make sure its events can never transpire again. Ugh.
I mean jeez. I'm bisexual, and while I don't affiliate myself with the LGBT movement, I fully support them. And I think it is a good thing for everyone to understand what LGBT stands for and their convictions, but anything more than that is just pushing their luck.
Now if they actually mean teach gay history in terms of erasing the stigma of homosexuality from the "record books" so to speak, then that is a good idea. It is bad enough that the unauthored adage "History is written by the victors." holds truth. Now you have to consider all of the bias against mentioning that which is considered taboo at the time. It isn't a stretch to believe that includes hiding mention of homosexuality throughout history.
I disagree, if they're going to include the achievements and history of what LGBT has done for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community I think that's fairly acceptable. You read in your text books how women have fought for their rights to vote, work, and become more independent. I'm sure back then when the topic was brought up to include it in text books, there were also people who took the stance of women just grand standing on something that wasn't that big of a deal. It's the same with slavery ending and the black community gaining rights and becoming individuals on equal ground.
I think having this will make the issue more open in the classroom too. Knowledge is power after all.

That's not a fair comparison.
Women and slaves were actually legally repressed. Those with different sexual identities rather than heterosexuality are not being legally repressed with the exception of marriage. Yeah, there is a lot of stigma as there was with women and black rights, but the lack of legal repression makes trying to compare the two really unfair to all three parties.
I suppose you are right in general though. I kind of got ahead of myself. That said though, I'd rather wait until there is history to really talk about. Unfortunate as it may be, there is little that can be said about LGBT activism and little more about gay history in general.

Maybe LGBT isn't where they want to be, but if you compare how things are whereas how they were back when our grandparents were our age - you didn't openly admit to your interest of the same sex because it could very well endanger your life, especially in the south. I look forward to the day when we have in our history books on the day that gay marriage is legal throughout the United States, and if it's not now - maybe potentially it can gain questions from students in class on why and what they can do if they feel that's wrong. Or maybe I'm just being overly optimistic about it. lol...

Oh God its only a matter of time before New York City does this too. You know, being that gay marriage is now legal in the state of New York.

Oh yeah it will.
The law will go leaps and bounds once the Baby Boomer Generation is no longer in power and Generation X is supplemented by Generation Y (which is probably most of us.)
Generation X is raised on the principles of the Baby Boomers, but certainly aren't as tied down to their convictions as the Baby Boombers, and Generation Y and Z are much more liberal than any generation that preceded it.

I think it should be part of a civil rights lesson or as events unfolded chronologicaly, but not singled out. maybe something in science or biology classes would be good too.

This is great it's good that we are finally starting to except everyone no matter who they are.
Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, a conservative family group, said under the new law parents will have no choice but to take their children out of public school and homeschool them to avoid what he said was "immoral indoctrination."

I agree. It seems detrimental to the LGBT cause to have statements in history books that someone made a contribution to society and then say that he/she was homosexual.
No one gave a shit about whether the Founding Fathers of America were fucking slaves or not, until people started making a big deal about it.

I think if teachers got to make there own curriculum and use the the text books to avoid any biest, diversity, PC bullcrap then it might be it ok like I can imagine at my school we would have divided our selves into pro and anti for a hypothetical debate but I could imagine some mother fuckers telling us we can't do that.
but I was thinking no way to this
When I was a kid and heard about sex I thought it took a guy and a guy to make a boy and a chick and a chick to make a girl. They need to teach the health implications just like they would for heterosexuality as well.
but I was thinking no way to this
"This new law will prohibit textbooks and teachers from telling children the facts that homosexuality is neither healthy nor biological."

Some raised concerns that it would indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality.
What a bunch of homophobic idiots, the point of the bill is so children can tolerate homosexuality. With that said, I'm like a few of you and don't quite know what historical events will be taught.
