Can't understand Japanese but appreciate J-music?
0
Recently, I've bought a dvd of Jigoku Shoujo III: Mitsagunae and I love the opening sone, Tsukihana. I download the song from the net, put it in my iPod, and it sits on my favorite playlist, right next to Papa roach, sum41, and a mixture of my other favorite songs (mostly american rock).
Question: Can you appreciate Japanese Music even if you can't understand Japanese?
I know a bit of japanese (like greetings, numbers, and how to write "hentai") and there's a subtitle for the songs in my anime dvds, but when i listen to it, I don't understand the lyrics except for a few words, but I appreciate the artistry of the melody, the catchy oriental rhythm, and the sweet voice of Nana Kitade (one of my faves, among Yui and Hitomi Takahashi).
I can't see why people don't like it...

I only listen to anime music, and although not much, they do help me in pronouncing the language right...
And I love the rythm too. Very much. To me the reason some people don't like it is because of the "anime" and "weaboo" label attached to the music. There are people that can't rest easy until they're in the main stream and have someone strange to ridicule.

I like japanese music because its quite different from its western counterpart.
I tend to look for translation of my favorite songs, but most of the time it wont matter if I cant find them...
About people... I find it funny that here in my country, the usual argument against japanese music is the fact you cant understand it, which would hold true if id didnt come from people who heard English music without knowing how to pronounce an A, let alone speak or understand a complete word.

well, although I can understand roughly the language, but what made me fall in love with it first is the music. The composition, the arrangement and all "the colors" of Japanese music is very unique and really nice to hear. the lyric for it is the factor that adds the "perfectness" to Japanese music.
and even the world has acknowledge (or more like, alienate) Japanese music by putting them into their own genre like: J-Rock, J-Pop, J-Rap etc.. etc..
and about people hating it.
PEOPLE WILL FEAR AND HATE WHAT IS UNKNOWN AND NOT FAMILIAR TO THEM

I do like a lot of diff anime songs, even thou i don't understand japanese either.
But the words there on some songs just make them sound so unique compared to other language/country's songs.
Also i mostly choose my songs if there's an epic kind of moment or it fits so very well that when i hear the song, it's like the moment in anime would run through my eyes.

My music library is about 90% jpop and jrock, i don't fully understand japanese but the rhythm and beat keeps me listening on. It just doesn't really compare to western music at all.

Tell me this: What is music? A compilation of certain tones, tunes and melodies to create a generally percieved "pleasant" sound. Words are merely used to express the singers opinions, if you can't understand those words it returns to basic wordless music to your mind.

i thought that its more of the allure of listening to another culture's music which you may not even understand at all.Reason gave by people who went to the world rainforest music festival
To me its the sound rhythm etc.Doesnt really matter what language it is anyway

No need to mention that I'm not going to do that. :)
I like anime music, since I can associate the song with something I've seen so the songs usually have slightly deeper meaning that some "normal songs" won't have. Plus the popular music around here (and most of the foreign production) is actually crap in my eyes, so I don't even bother to listen to it.
And yeah, I'm enjoying this anime music even though I understand just a few words but w/e, I've been listening to songs in English before I was even able to introduce myself, and now I'm able to write a post like this (o_O).
All that matters is the person's opinion and tastes.

Qua Japanese music I listen to Maximum the Hormone, and even if you're a pro in Japanese, you will not understand a most of the lyrics.

I can Enjoy it!
Personally i may only understand about 8 sentences in the song, but the melody and cool tunes are enough to keep me interested in the song!
I think most people just avoid other cultures music in fear that they may make themselves look stupid for not understanding the music. I feel that they already look stupid for disowning a style of music before they even give it a try!
But thats just my opinion after all!

I 2nd that. My iPod has full of anime/video game music. Also I have some American rock songs but the majority is anime/video game music.

I really enjoy music that i've heard in animes.
Since i don't go searching for music and mostly listen to things people suggest, i found the Pillows from FLCL, and Yoko Kanno's stuff from Cowboy Bebop.

I've been listening to J-pop & J-rock for a few years now, mainly my interest was triggered due to anime. I hardly understand Japanese except for a few words but that certainly doesn't take away the pleasure that I get from listening to the language. I find it pleasant to listen to even though I don't quite understand it.
So yes, I appreciate it a lot whilst I don't understand it.

I agree fully. From my experience everybody that has heard any J-Pop or J-Rock that I was listening to and complained about it used the tired line, " But you can't even understand what they are saying" when what they were really saying was , " There are no hoes or bitchin cars hurr durr."

I used to like rap but latly its been pretty bad. When I thought it was all over for the genre I had discoverd this rapper named Diggy-MO' and he blew me away. Basiclly I fell that japanese music has a better sound production wise and has a bit more meaning. Not that there isn't crappy jap music but I feel that they aleast try harder to make classic music. Also on the understanding the language part I dont think you need to know what there saying to enjoy the song. Case in point Diggy-MO' raps like a crazy maniac and you don't really know what hes saying anyway but it's still sounds awesome!
For those of you who don't know he did the third ed for soul eater Bakuso yume uta

I only know the basics and i can hardly understand like anything jap anime song means.
99% of my songs are in Japanese and I love them, maybe because of the i-dont-know-what-they-are-saying factor.
I find it better then those loud noisy guy from the room beside me that keep playing club songs like that tokyo drift song thing repeatingly with a loud bass or the mainstream songs.
I can appriciate some other nice music of other language but i dont know why i never put them in my song list.
