music is universal no mater what the language may be. i have a love of j-pop, j-rock ect. im very diverse when it comes to music and japanese muisc is no exception. some of my favovrate groups range from the pillows, der-en-grey, nami tamaki, yoko kanno, and tm revolution. if i hear the song long enough i can almost sing along too even though i have no idea what im saying. music is for everyone and is one of those gifts you can share with everyone. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!

I have the weridest nature to enjoy music that i cannot understant (fully)
Thus, jap music or even music from other countries fit the bill nicely. The beat is the sole factor between them that'll make me decided which is worthy of my playlist.

I really enjoy music that i've heard in animes.Since i don't go searching for music and mostly listen to things people suggest, i found the Pillows from FLCL, and Yoko Kanno's stuff from Cowboy Bebop.
I'll second that

I listen to Rock like Kings of Leon, RnB, and a few Rap but that's the only western genre I listen to; unlike with J-genres, I listen to almost every genre, even from the ones made by Ali Project...
I find that Japanese are diverse in producing music; they could put that something that no other country has. They usually produce unique music, unlike some that tend to repeat their beats. No offense people...

I couldn't give a fucking shit about lyrics.
Music is the instruments: guitars, pianos, drums, vocals... lyrics are nothing. Japanese have some unique and creative shit going on, and really, it's inspiring as a guitarist to check out their style.
I would actually prefer the vocals be like this...
than for the song to be focused on the LYRICS, not even the vocals, but the LYRICS of a song.

Found a solution to the problem:
3 words:

of the 70 gb's of music i have, about 65gb's is anime music (which is j-pop or j-rock). i enjoy it so much more then western music because it sounds so different and a lot of western music sounds similar to each other (Creed may die now). and i dont speak japanese either, but i can still appreciate the lyrics along with the rhythm and beat.

They say that music is universal regardless of language used. That assumption seems true because I love J-music even though I can barely understand it. (Broken knowledge of the Japanese language learnt from watching anime.)

Curious and Wondering
Well, when I started listening to j-music, at first I enjoyed the rhythm and harmony for what it is, since j-music definitely for me is a welcome breather from always listening to the same English music formula.
And it sounded really good - the first ever j-music I heard was from Pizzicato Five, "Sweet Soul Revue", then a few years later Utada Hikaru's PV, "First Love". I was hooked then since.
Then I started getting piqued by the lyrics. One thing led to another, and eventually I learned basic japanese to at least understand the lyrics better.

well I grade a band on their collective "sound"("niche" whatever you wanna call it, their "ness") and japanese bands to me do a better job at setting theirs apart from others every japanese artist has something about them that captures me. Thats the only way I can explain it.

Question: Can you appreciate Japanese Music even if you can't understand Japanese?Definitely. I'm not such a fan of JPop, but I love the Japanese neoclassical darkwave scene, with acts such as Wakeshima Kanon, for her beautiful yet haunting voice and her amazing cello work, or Yousei Teikoku.
Additionally I like a lot of the hardcore techno coming out of Japan, namely DJ SHARPNEL and REDALiCE. And I would be amiss not to mention Merzbow, though noise isn't exactly the most accessible genre (but I recommend it to anyone curious, his works are quality).
But as to JPop, to me it sounds not too dissimilar to western pop, to be perfectly honest. Sure, I can't understand the lyrics (this actually makes me dislike it less), but musically they follow similar patterns and instrumentation, and I'm just not a fan of that style.

Hmmm... For me I only listen to anime music. Most of the music in my playlists are OP,ED, or inserts. If the OSTs are good enough, I'll also listen to them. For me, since my library/playlists are too large, I tend to pick out a number of those that I would listen to more often and save it as a separate playlist. My main anime playlist would just be there for me to shuffle through when I don't have anything I want to listen to in particular.
I also pick out songs and group them by the mood it gives. Those fast paced kinds like Pre-Parade (Toradora) and so on would be in one playlist, and a number of emo songs (mainly from Ef, Clannad, and some others) as a separate EMO playlist. In particular, I like the song Kawaranai mono (from Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, sung by Oku Hanako)
As of now, the groups, singer's I'm more interested in are:
Elisa, YUI, Yui Makino, Yui Horie, Rie Kugumiya, Lia, Mami Kawada, Ali Project and a couple more. Some songs I like recently would be... Only My Railgun, some from Tsubasa Chronicles (esp Synchronicty), and Paradise Lost (Ga Rei Zero - I got influenced by ISML's PV. LOL)
J-Music in general, helps in my vocabulary and I've been able to understand spoken Japanese better - I can watch raws more comfortably now! Yay! - to the extent of being more familiar with basic vocab than a friend of mine who took courses. I still suck at reading Katakana though...)

I just find Japanese music calming and it's very interesting as many people have posted, so much different then western music as I have stopped listening to western music. Even though you don't understand the language, it's very reassuring as Japanese music have a great rhythm. Plus I fell in love with the music due to anime and Exposure towards Visual Novels and Series. Gotta love the Japanese for this. XD

Thats exactly what I did, I have about 161 different songs and I got so tired of cycling thru them especially when driving which I can only do at a stoplight. <sigh> I want a deck with an auxilary port so I can hook my Itouch up and scroll songs thru my deck so much. I love the songs from Yui Again and Rolling Star and Hikari from Yui Horie. Grouping songs by mood is a good idea so I'll have to try that. I don't know about helping with vocabulary since I usually rely on my textbooks and anime subs to do that but listening to japanese music does help you nail down the pronunication of the japanese language. I want to be able to understand japanese to the point I can watch a raw through and through and understand it near perfectly or at least close enough.

I love japanese music, regardless of my knowledge of their language.
I've been listening to it constantly for over a year now and have picked up the language (from other places too) quite well. It's scary to realize how much of the lyrics you understand xD
*listens to songs now*
*understands the whole section*
Why oh why?
Owell, it's a good hobby to keep me occupied
